I read an article called 10 Turkey Hunting Myths. So, I'm wondering what the Old Gobbler contributors think are the top turkey hunting myths. What say you?
1: that a mature gobbler will not cross a fence to come to you.
(they will actually if hot enough duck under a fence or even fly over a fence to come to you)
2: that a mature gobbler want cross a big creek to come to you.
(Again if he is hot and likes your setup and or calling he is coming)
If he gobbles at your calls he's interested
If he doesn't gobble at your calls he's not interested.
1.Field turkeys can't be killed without decoys.
2. Gobblers won't come downhill.
3. If you bump a bird then you are done for the day.
4. Roosted is roasted.
They won't cross water.
That you can call a gobbler up to a National forest road and to your running truck(with or without the radio playing ) scrapping on an out of tune box call and while breathing out of your mouth. This myth has somehow been passed along for several generations and is the preferred hunting tactic in Louisiana.
Most everything you have ever heard, when a turkey doesn't know what he's going to do no one else knows eather

If you wear your hat backwards, you can fool the turkeys into thinking you're not looking at them.

That turkeys try to come to you with the sun at their backs. :goofball:
That the "bad" calling you hear has to be another hunter... then the hen walks out :)

Some turkeys are unkillable.

X2. They might be harder to kill but it's not impossible.....

If it's raining in the morning a gobbler will stay on the roost and ignore your calls.

We call them courtesy gobbles! Thank you for showing up but I'm busy call me back later! lol
Well they can get pretty curtious at times!
the first day you don't hear any gobbles someone always says they are done breeding and its all over
In general I think people give the birds too much credit they they aren't evil geniuses out masterminding us in an elaborate game of chess.

You can't call a turkey down a hill.
If a turkey is gobbling mid day he is an easy kill. Maybe... Maybe not

We call 'em 'F. U. Gobbles'
These are great! I concur with most of them (fence, downhill, water) as I've seen em too.
I want to test the backwards hat trick haha.
On the unkillable topic - that could be a fun thread - the birds you just couldn't kill (or had a hard time). Thoughts?

I've also heard that turkeys want gobble at night.
Over the summer last year we had some pretty nasty thunderstorms and at 10-11oclock the birds were going crazy shock gobbling on the roost in the dark at the lightening.

fence crossing is one that stands out. The first time I saw a hen slide under a fence I remember thinking..."Now she's not suppose to do that" It was then that I started realizing the minute you say something won't happen it will...

That Jakes never gobble.
That turkey poults are so stupid they will stand in the rain with their heads up until the drown.
The myth that you can't kill a turkey by stripping down and back-azz crawling up to him. I mean come on, how many times has this been disproved?
That the funky chicken is more effective than a badonkadeke :toothy9:
Turkeys are smart.
Hey can i borrow, couple boxes of Tss , i'm out ... i will gladly repay you Tuesday after my Federal are in stock...

There are myths, and then there are lies. Most people know that one is a flat out lie. When it comes to decoys, Badonkadeke is the pinnacle. :D
If i'm going to turkey hunt do i need a gun or just a decoy...
There is no "magic" turkey call.
Some days they like this, some days they like that.
But if a Gobbler doesn't want to play, he isn't going to play.
Also, you can't get an answer from a Gobbler that isn't there!
:fud: :OGani:
That they can see a gnat at 300 yards and hear it fart at 400 yards.

. At least a myth is in the realm of possibility. You're just talking crazy stuff now. :TooFunny:
