40% DEET is still the all-around best. Besides, if you don't use DEET then your gloves and mask won't smell right after season is over.

Adding permethrin every couple washes in addition to the DEET is about fool-proof, though.

From what i've seen DEET doesn't do anything to ticks. Any brand using permethrin should be fine.

Permethrin on the clothing, and a repellent containing picaridin for the skin.  Unlike DEET, the picaridin does not stink, feel hot on the skin, or melt plastic.  Seems every bit as effective as DEET to me.

I've used Sawyers for the last two seasons and haven't pulled a single tick off of me since.  I was hunting with my buddy two days ago and we had to walk through waist high grass for 300yds; he pulled 8 ticks off of himself and I didn't have any.

I tried that for deer. I had poor luck with mosquitoes. I wouldn't mind trying again. How did you apply it?

This is also my secony year using Sawyer's and I've had zero ticks on me.  I now have my dad and a couple of buddies sold on it as well.  It's great stuff.

Permethrin (Sawyers, Repel Permanone, or other) for ticks and Thermocell for skeeters.  NO DEET!!!

Sawyers for me. I also use a thermocell for the skeeters. I wouldn't go turkey hunting without either.

I also am a firm believer in sawyers. Used it the last few years and never pulled a tick off of me. Thermacell has worked well for mosquitos. I kicked off my spring season earlier on a trip to sc, and I saw mosquitos so big that they looked like helicopters. Not one bite.

Great stuff but follow the directions on applying it. It works well for me.

I live in tick country, E.Shore of Maryland. My advice is make your own ... its better and a great deal cheaper. Recepies can easily be found on line. Chemical can be found at any store that caters to livestock.

:icon_thumright: For Sawyer ...... Permethrin, hands down the best repellent I have ever used. Not on skin, spray down ALL clothing and let dry. Have watched a tick crawling up my snake boot and fall off half way up. No issues at all with ticks, chiggers. Wally world not expensive, yellow and black spray bottle.  :icon_thumright: I'll even spray my SG and bow.

Origianl Listerine mouth wash in a spray bottle. Keeps ticks and chiggars off of you, I know it sounds cazy, but it sure works.

Never have used deet but if you get it on your hads it can take some camo finishes off!  Sawyers the best or anything with .5% permithrin (not the insecticides) made for clothes.

This stuff works great.  3 hunters, combined time of about 75 days in the woods last spring = 0 ticks.  None.
Mixing it 15 to 1 will make two gallons of 0.625 % solution.  That makes it cheap enough to cover clothes, vests, boots, etc. without breaking the bank.  We mix it in a 1 gallon sprayer and liberally coat the materials.  It's good for a month, but we respray at two weeks.

I am glad to hear so many people use sawyers, I use sawyers and permanone.  These people that are using real high percentage rates of permithrin are geting it from insecticides, products for pets, and What ever else, all have permithrin in them.  Every one of them have carriers and/or elements that are harmeful to humans.  The permithrin will not hurt you but the other stuff will.  Permanone and sawyers are the only 2 products that I know of approved for spraying clothes, drying them and then wearing them.  All the other products are not approved for spraying clothing because the carriers and other elements will get into your skin, and your body cannot remove them like it can permithrin.  If you are considering cutting your own permithrin I would highly recommend some serious research of the permithrin products on google, I would start at permithrin for clothing, approved permithrin for clothing, etc.  There is a reason none of those products are approved for human use.  All I can say is it's your skin !

If you're going the home mixing route you have to make sure you get water based, and not oil based.  The Martins Permethrin 10% is 10% permethrin and 90% inert, no petroleum distallates.  15 to 1 is 0.625%, 19 to 1 is .05%.  For $14 on Amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/Martins-Permethrin-10-Indoor-Outdoor/dp/B001EVKCKM ) I make up 2 gallons of 0.625% spray, taking care of a 5 hunters and all their equipment.  The same amount of Sawyers, being .05%, would be well over $200.  I would not consider going in the spring woods without it.  Like I said above, 3 hunters with a total of 75 days in the woods = zero ticks.

I mix my own tick spray using permethrin I get at tractor supply. Never had an issue with ticks since I started using the stuff 10 years ago. Do Not Spray It on your skin and don't dip the wife's' cat in it either, unless you don't like cats. Doesn't harm most animals but it will kill a cat stone dead within ten minutes.

Another vote for Sawyers.  It is a little expensive, but I haven't had a tick on me in years. I've hunted alongside buddies who've peeled numerous ticks off them when back at the truck, while I had none.

Another thing you can do is shed your clothes as soon as you are out the field and put them in a trashbag.  Once you get home, throw them in the dryer for 30 minutes.  The heat will kill any ticks that might be in/on your clothing.
