General Forum / Re: Turkey meat question

I have a big Igloo cooler not sure size but could put two or three full turkeys in it. Anyway I freeze ahead of time about fifteen or so one quart orange juice jugs and stand them upright on bottom of cooler. Enough to cover entire floor and that will last me a few weeks at a time. I just breast things out take legs and thighs pull out a few jugs from center and put meat in between and good to go. Never no extra water in cooler and jugs don't melt that fast. The only other thing I do is because it sits on the back end of my truck in the hot sun. Then I have and old white bed comforter I put over cooler to help keep heat from the cooler.

Did it in 2020. Was my 3rd bird that year. Came in gobbling like crazy and strutting in the thick brush. Had no idea it was a Jake. Stubby hooks lol

Yes I rattle canned my tan ones as well but the tan works better for camo. Guessing it would take several full cans to drown out the blue. I'll buy the blue if they don't get any tan in over the next few months. I only have a handful of hunts left here this year and am good for now.

Unfortunately, it's not an upgrade to get us to 600. I sure was hoping though walking to him. Today was a special day. My buddy that introduced me to turkey hunting back in high school 25+ yrs ago was able to hunt with me this afternoon at my place. We hunted for many years together, doubling multiple times during that span. Then life happened. We got married and had kids. We haven't been able to turkey hunt together for at least 10 years, probably 13.

We arrived just before noon. Had to wait until after my son's swim meet to get out. He has never been to my place and knew I wanted to kill my first there so bad. It was a roller coaster afternoon. 11:42 we walked down from the gate, crossed a camera as I showed him my first food plot/fruit tree orchard. We backed  tracked through and headed to my second food plot to show him. Signal is poor and my camera sent delayed pics as we headed up. I looked at them and two gobblers walked by at 11:47 while I showed him the first plot. Never knew they were around. I assume they were pushed through from the neighbors as their hay field was being cut.

After continuing the tour of my place we decided to sit and call some. After 1.5 hrs a bird gobbled back toward the truck. We assumed it was the two from earlier. We head back. As we approached the area the tractor on the neighbors got close and we couldn't hear anything. We decided to take a break at the truck while he cut hay. Unknowing to us the two birds walked back by the camera less than 50 yds as we left from the truck. Got video of one gobbler walking off as we come into view. It was becoming comical. They never gobbled to let us know they were around. If they had we couldn't hear much due to the tractor.

As the tractor moved off we heard a bird gobble on the other side of the property so we eased up to the food plot to get a better listen. Called some and he gobbled. We moved a little closer and so did he. My buddy stayed back as I moved up about 50 yds in the woods. He called, bird gobbled. Earlier this season I had a bird do the same thing and hang up on the fence. This time would be different. As he strutted closer I began hearing him spit and drum. Still couldn't see him. My buddy had him fired up. He was hot. Finally I see his fan. He's coming right down the fence. There's a gap in it just ahead. He doesn't hesitate. Dips below it, pops back into strut. Head as white as can be. He's on my property now. He's mine. As he struts closer he hits an opening. Head comes up, BOOM! Felt like old times as we celebrated.

I looked at a plug in cooler at Costco and it was very nice, albeit expensive.

Yes, I think so. It has been a slower season for most folks I've talked to in the area. But, I just think the actions been later this year.
Zobo, what kind of trumpet is that?

I've hunted a Hustlin' Hen since the late 2000s with great success.  Nice sounding call.  It grabs 'em by the ears.
