Now that's the STUFF! Great vid.! Made me feel like I was there...
Like how you interact with each other and the calling...Spot on brutha'!
Great video man, hope to get down there in next few years
Glad you guys enjoyed it! I hope to release a video every few days until the full 70/80 day spring is out there. . as long as I can keep up on the editing end. It's nonstop right now. I don't have a stock pile I'm chipping off of, you're seeing them right after they're finished up.
Dave is one of the best turkey Hunter and video maker in our turkey hunting comemuntie.
I liked it. Nice to see the "shakes" after the shot and an an honest appreciation for the bird and the show he gave.
I enjoyed it. I am concerned you won't get as many views since it's not semi-live/after season. But I don't care and you all may not either.

Excellent! Excited to see more
I'm convinced you have to actually be part turkey to pull off that level of calling. Excellent video. As always, looking forward to seeing more.

One thing you will NEVER see us take for granted. We don't glorify the kill. We love these animals and truly wish the game was catch and release. Unfortunately, it's not.

I aware this may be the case. But to go semi-live I would have to set some time away from hunting them since this isn't my full time job. And we know that's not going to happen. So, I play the hand I'm dealt.
Thanks for the compliments guys!
And Day 2 should be up in just a moment! :toothy9:
Why couldn't you call that bird into the wide open??? :goofball: I mean come on Dave.. Pick a better spot to kill one from. :TooFunny: :TooFunny: :turkey2:

Alright Cove. Ready for another one!
Day 3 is up! It's a quick one.
Well it goes that way sometimes. It makes you appreciate the easy ones!
Yeah #3 brings back some painful but really good memories. Thanks for showing it all.
Also the reworked vid is a great touch and very unique. Interesting to hear how you talk through the decision making process on the hunt. A lot of times our decisions are so quick and reactive but also kinda of programmed from experience they're more automatic. It's good to hear what works for someone else and their experience to kinda give a different perspective, weigh it against what maybe I would of done in that same scenario and see the difference.
Also like how you explained you don't claim to be experts but just trying to show it like it happened. Like they say, "Keepin it reeeaaaaaalll"!
It better when it's dry you can travel farther when I was younger I would walk 8 miles or more to my favorite spot wet or dry and lot's of time's not hear or kill a gobbler but I love to hunt the South Florida swamps.
Day 4 is live!
Keep them coming!! Fantastic videos.

Thanks cove.
I've hunted in that same area many times as I grew up in South Florida, but it was 30-40 years ago as a kid/young man, absolutely love that place and your video brought back some great memories.....nicely done, love your videos.
:thanks: for all the compliments and for those following along!
The reWork of Day 2 is out there for anyone wanting in on the decision making process that put us in the right spot that morning.
I have gotten Day 5 up! :turkey2:
Yay!! Keep em coming!!
To say I have enjoyed your videos would be an understatement. It really takes some sacrifice to hunt that terrain. I don't think I could ever get a good nights sleep in a hammock.
Really enjoying the videos. Looking forward to the next one.
Day 6 is live! Y'all have a look to see what shakes out with the gobbler we roosted on Day 5. :funnyturkey:
Loved day 6, and can't wait for day 7. Keep em coming!
Awesome! I watched 5 last night, and will watch 6, later tonight.
Love the videos, you guys are working hard for those turkeys. Video 6 was awesome, that was close up and personal fly down, as he did the unexpected, way to make it work out like you did.
Keep em coming Dave! I really appreciate how y'all hunt!!

From what I know he's had it since childhood. And if you spend a little time around him, it's a perfect fit! He is 100mph all the time.

Most of the locals/ regulars I know do not sweat it. What's required to hunt the areas they frequent is next to impossible for someone visiting from out of state to access. That combined with the area being over 700,000 acres. . . :TooFunny: Good Luck. :icon_thumright:
I have one more day in Florida to share then we will being moving northward! Hope to get that one out this evening.
We turkey hunters, in the SE, or that hunt out W, probably don't want to know how many venomous snakes that we have been on top of, prior to daylight or after dark, but it seems that it would be easy to have a bad moccasin or gator encounter, around all of those ponds, before or after light.

There is going to be ALOT more. I documented every day of the season. Many of the hunts are before work and may not be much action but you're going to see it. That was my plan from the beginning and it's still what I'm attempting to produce. The "cream" was in Florida. No doubt. But I am hoping to show the grind that accompanies hunting 70 or 80 days in a Spring.
The Alabama season opens on today's release.
I've gotten Day 9 up! Things will begin to get "real" at this point, alot more before work hunts and hard headed national forest/ state land gobblers. Basically what I'm saying is our Florida luck didn't follow us. LoL
I saw all the Instagram pictures so I know that's a load of bull hahaha! But seriously it's nice to know that I'm not the only one having some tough days out there. I catch myself thinking sometimes "man if I could call like that". It's cool that y'all are not just great callers but y'all are complete turkey junkies. I've already picked up lots of little things just from the first videos.

It's tough to not pressure them too much when the season's in. . . but taking inventory is the right move at that time of the season, in that area anyway.

That's right!
Somewhere I have pictures of doing the barefoot dash across a creek where you can clearly still see snow banks on the north slope of the hill behind me on an opening day in upstate NY I believe it was 29 that morning but I had a tag and there was 7 birds gobbling on the otherside. The wade back was easier cuz I was about 21lbs heavier
Wish I had thought of the contractor bags that morning, refuse to wear rubber boots especially in the mountains

Well, we keep hunting that's for sure. But as April approaches we are split up for the most part and most of the activities aren't captured on film. Chubb's spent time visiting new states moving toward completing his US slam and it was "business" only on those trips; in other words there was no videoing. I carried the camera every morning as promised but the chore of self filming is more than I can handle a lot of the time. I did have the camera around though. Hopefully what I can put together will make sense. We had an SD card that was in one of the vlog cameras come up missing and I'm just now getting into the parts of the season where that SD card was used. It's infuriating. :bike2:

My first thought was the gobbler knew exactly where that hen should have been and when he got up on their level and couldn't spot her then he got nervous. He's probably been hunted hard before.
That gobbler was completely fooled; about as fooled as you can have one in my experience. He noticed something wasn't right up ahead. I'm not sure if he caught a glare off the camera lens, a silhouette off the edge of the tree or something else but it was just enough to make him nervous and retreat. He wasn't overly spooked because he started gobbling well about 15 minutes later. We had to pull out for work at that point.

That was what I was thinking, too. To my mind, if he just didn't see the hen and decided to bail, he would have just quietly bailed. It sounded to me like he was alarm putting, which means he saw something he thought might be a predator. Then again, he's a turkey and there's no telling what one might do any given instance.
He didn't see what he was told was was there. They get nervous in a hurry, God bless em.
I agree... he saw something he didn't like. Great videos !

Cove, so one of my conclusions, right or wrong, after watching all your videos would be that at least in 2018, those public land FLORIDA birds are a lot easier to hunt than Alabama birds. Your success rate was a lot higher in FLORIDA from what I've seen so far. Would that be a fair statement to make?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Dave will obviously know better than I would but they were able to hunt longer in the day in Florida and were able to roost turkeys in the evening compared to their hunts this far in Alabama being short before work hunts. When they had all day to hunt in Bama Chubbs killed a turkey. From my experience I dont think thats a fair conclusion.
I'm starting to get the shakes, Dave.
I need my new video fix.

It would not. Our percentages in AL climb when we spend all day with them. In Florida, we essentially got to live with them. Not that I'm saying AL birds are push overs, I'd stack public land turkeys in the mountain regions of GA/AL/TN against any of them out there. I said it once, that I believe a lot of gobblers in those regions die of old age. :toothy9: We left many mornings to fulfill work duties with gobblers that needed another hour of attention. Turkeys work on turkey time and there is no way to "quicken" turkey time. You either participate on their watch or you don't participate. That coupled with I'm fairly certain we used ALL of our luck in Florida. :toothy12: :TooFunny:
Day 17 is about to be up!! It gets worse . . . if you can believe that. :newmascot:
I'm glad y'all have footage in the vehicle before the hunts! It has me reminiscing of some of the conversations buddies and I had before hunts this past season :TooFunny:! Keep up the fantastic work! It's been a blast to watch.
Oh, brother. That guy on day 17 was such a tool.
I know we all want to get our bird, but c'mon folks, a little Golden Rule helps all of us.
If I ever see someone in a spot I want to hunt, even if I beat them there. I want out, unless I know for sure that they leave the area without spooking every bird around for a mile.
I don't know those folks. I don't know what they're willing to do with a shotgun. I don't know how much they might do to booger up the area and the turkeys in it. I immediately want to book it to an area where I think I'm the only person around. That's just me. It obviously isn't how that dude thinks.
Otherwise, thanks for documenting it. Warts and all.
I wish(or maybe I don't) I could see Chubs's thought train works. Here I am waiting for him to say something profound about the next day's hunt and then... "A hamburger on a donut bun would be like dating a girl with a beard"
Just getting around to running through the video's, Dave. Great stuff all the way around,...as always. Very entertaining as well as informative. Love the pre- and post-hunt dialogue,...and the hunt sequences, whether successful or not, are really well put together. Real, traditional spring gobbler hunting at its finest, under real conditions, and with outstanding videography under conditions that make accomplishing that extremely difficult....not to mention your world-championship calling ability. Your hunting buddies are not too shabby either! Five stars all the way around, my friend!
Hey Dave...Been watching the vids. on binge recently. Sometimes watching them twice in one day!
I really liked the "rework" vid. where you talked about strategy. You said things on that vid. that I have thought for a long time but could never string together to articulate them. One thing in particular that you said that I do regularly is waiting until the gobbler is distracted before you call. I like to call when their view is blocked by a tree that they're walking by or when they first start to move, like you said.
Also the shock yelp or cackle. I've had great success getting gobblers to move with that tactic. AND, like you said, it's got to be immediate...
Good, good stuff brutha'!
I am eating this stuff up. I think the ultimate hunt you can go on is minimalist. Some calls a strut seat a gun some camo and go out and call a tom. This past spring got tag soup but had birds every day. Some were edumicated but thats what makes it why I love it so. I'm not criticizing as long as its legal do it. But for me this is what turkey hunting is about. My hat is off to the Pinhoti Project, you guys are in the groove. Thanks for these as it is videos and thru your project I hope more hunters try this style of hunting out! Nice to see the prayers too. :z-winnersmiley:

Haha I was thinking the same thing about Chubbs. You can picture that imagination of his constantly racing in circles. Definitely reminds me of some of my old hunting buddies.
I just got Day 18 out there. It was a dandy gobbler! :newmascot:
That was one fine bird!
Nice bird.
Day 19 is up fellas! Sometimes it's pure determination that gets the job done. :toothy9:
Now you guys are rolling.

Thanks guys! The next one is a nail biter. :toothy9:
Great stuff Dave, every morning I am checking for new videos.
I'll have a reWorked video looking back at Day 8 later today and Days 20 and 21 will be up tomorrow.
Just watched day 21 hunt.
You guys are lucky. Where I hunt public in the northeast that hunter would not have stopped till he was standing at the base of the tree that gobbler was rooted in.
When you think you have seen it all someone will always show you a new level of dumb.
I swear some days it's like someone set off a stupid bomb in the area....lol.
Keep em coming Cove!
The Day 20/21 episode (fantastic as always) raised some questions in my mind about the subject of hunter interference. I think this topic really deserves some discussion,...and this seems to be a good time and place for it based on the video.
Of course, any ethical turkey hunter tries to avoid interfering with another that is first on a bird. However, there is sometimes a fine line between intentional interference and unintentional interference. Anybody that has hunted turkeys for very long on public land has most likely, at one time or another, unknowingly come in on another hunter working a bird. The point at which a hunter becomes aware that another hunter is there is the point at which it becomes a question of ethics. We should all adhere to the rule that the first guy on a bird gets to work him until they kill him or give up on that attempt.
The issue of parked vehicles and how that should be interpreted is another matter. How much "berth" should one hunter give another when they see a vehicle parked somewhere? The obvious answer is that if a hunter sees a vehicle parked along a road, they should "move along" far enough that they feel certain they would not be screwing up the other guys hunt. However, sometimes "moving along" means driving on down the road that the other vehicle is parked along. That situation is often unavoidable if someone wants to hunt,...and sometimes that will unfortunately result in driving by hunters/gobblers that might have randomly ended up pretty close to the road in a set-up. Again, the point at which it becomes unethical is when the second hunter stops/calls within "range" of the other hunter, especially if they are, or become, aware that the other hunter is nearby.
There are a lot of specific, public-land nuances to these general rules. For instance, I am sure some public areas require hunters to park in specific parking areas,...that would certainly complicate matters for everybody. There are also those instances where a hunter is not familiar with the area/topography and ends up near another hunter working a bird that they really had every intention of avoiding.
The bottom line is that the issue of hunter interference is often not so "cut and dried" as it might seem at first glance.
..And finally, this is not to be taken as a commentary one way or the other on what happened in the video. Cove and Chubs are the only ones that can make the call as to what happened that morning. This just seemed like a good time to talk about it for the sake of discussion.
Personally I have no problem sharing land with others. I remember a few years back a fellow pulled into a public hunting spot as I was putting my vest on to go in. He got out and came over to ask where I planned on hunting. I told him and I could see the disappointed look come across his face. I asked where he was planning on hunting and he responded that he had roosted two birds the night before exactly where I was planning on hunting. I told him to have at them and that I would stay on the right side of the access road if that gave him enough room. He was delighted with that and off we went. I heard the Tom's at daylight from my listening point and I never heard a gunshot so I guess he didn't have much luck. The point is to treat others the way you want to be treated and hope others can do the same. You will still run into selfish jerks but I like to believe that their reward comes later in life. You don't have to be mean to idiots. They are pretty darn good at screwing themselves over on their own. The point is if you know someone is working a bird back the heck off and let them. If you get to talk to a fellow hunter then discuss you plans and work out a way everyone can have a safe and fun day without screwing each other over. Of course this takes people who have integrity and mean what they promise (not many left). It's all you can do though. On one day I had a fellow ruin four different setups on a pair of gobblers. Every time I would fire them up and get them coming he would slip between us to pick them off. He never called once. The fellow I was hunting with (a law enforcement officer) got so mad at him on the fourth incident that he chased him through the woods screaming at him to stop so he could kick his $&*!#. So yup I have been there and completely understand the frustration.
Love this channel!
Awesome hunting videos.

Just watched today's posting.
Tough 3 days but so real world public land hunting.
Thanks for sharing Dave.
Just got another day up! It's day 25. Thanks for those of you keep up with it!
Everyone has to miss sometime, those barbwire fences can definitely break up a pattern. Always looking forward to the next video, keep up the good work.
Day 25 episode miss
Was the gobbler over a slight rise from the shooter? It looked like from the camera he should have been visible.
I know I pulled the trigger a half a dozen times before te miss.........lol.
Day 26
That gobbler was on the ground early. I had a few of those this year......
Love it!

He most definitely was. And he would fall out of sight then reappear. Shane never had the visuals I had, those big oaks just to the left of the gobbler were a constant issue for Shane. We all know how a gobbler seems to stay behind a tree for the entire walk in right? Perfect example. :toothy9: I think Tom Kelly said that it's scientifically proven. :toothy9:

Way early!! You know they're eager when they're ready to jump down that soon. And it was a situation where you take the gamble to get there or listen to them gobble all morning because once he met up with the others I would bet the farm they would have been tough to wrestle with.
And a HUGE shout out if gratitude to you Cove for the extra work u did burnin the midnight oil. Made today a WHOLE LOT BETTER! Plus my nurse loved watching.

It probably gets worse. Most people think it's the limited sleep, and a bit of it may be, but most of it is aggravation from having to clock into work and leave the woods early. I find my spirits climb a bit when I get to travel. It'll be coming in another week or so. . .

Dave the corn in the birds, could it be from private land where a non hunter is feeding wildlife? I heard a dog barking early that morning don't know if there are homes or cabins near enough. I also don't know how long it takes corn to process through a turkeys crop
We see that all the time where local non hunters try and keep the animals safe by feeding through the season.
I love the week day hunts, very relateable to where I drive 35min, walk 50min to hunt an hour and a half on public before the 50min walk out and a 60min drive to work I had mornings of rain and fog where birds were still on the roost when it was time to leave the woods.

They don't make many non- hunters in this neck of the woods. There is a small piece of private tucked into this stretch of NF and I'm assuming that's where the feed came from. I've never heard "life" from that little piece until this day when the dogs started barking. I did several years back bump into a gentleman who used that piece as access to the NF. You can rest assured, the corn in the crops of those gobblers was put there for one purpose- and I'm just glad they didn't get the satisfaction, at least with that one.
I've got to say that it's totally refreshing to see how truly thankful and humble you are after a kill. Seeing that reverence means alot to me. My post-kill ritual is usually pretty similar. After that initial flood of adrenaline levels out, there's nothing like sitting next to him and smoking a cigar (or a fresh dip). As I heard you put it, "spending a little time with him". Thanks for making it known that we are not all bloodthirsty and hell-bent on producing a dead turkey at the end of every day.
As far as the corn goes, I've noticed that here in the NE also. Usually by the time our seasons start, some farmers have got some early plantings in. I've always assumed that's where the corn came from. I guess that may not always be the case!
Just watched days 20-21 great footage of the gobbler on the limb and his reaction to the truck and horrible excuse for calling.
Gotta laugh sometimes at what passes for a hunter nowadays lol. What kinda moron hears a turkey gobble then cranks up the truck and moves it? Not to mention the guy that tried to walk around y'all in another video and flushed the gobbler plus the corn baiters. Maybe with any luck these nimrods will watch these videos and see how stupid they are and stop. If even one idiot is shamed into acting right it was well worth the effort.
Only thing that would have made it better is if y'all could have got video of the guy doing the drive by crow calling lol.
Cove I think you might of let an old one with no beard slip by you. I know you could see him better than I could on the video though. But he had some old gobbler characteristics!
I've been getting caught up on this rainy morning. Really enjoying it.

I just think these videos are spot on. I guess there are hunters and then there are TURKEY HUNTERS. Whether you get a bird or not its still an enjoyable day and hopefully you either know what you did wrong or you learn something. Thank you for the honesty and the respect you show for the birds and for letting showing your feelings on at the end of the hunt. I hope it doesn't end at 34!

I've left my old 12ga 870 original bottomland sitting next to a tree a couple times and 1x didn't think I'd ever find it and started freaking out a bit. Probably searched for 30 min until I remembered I'd set it down on the walk out to readjust a bird I was carrying and had walked right past it on the way back to the area I killed him in. I watched day 33 last night. The calling Dave did to the gobbler that just kept moving away was outstanding. When I listen to someone that can call like that, not be successful, it just makes me realize how hard it is for an average caller, or even a below average caller, to turn a gobbler around when the gobbler has a destination to be somewhere else in mind. Being where he wants to be, or being where he wants to go is a big part of turkey hunting success. If that calling did not turn him around, nothing less than a visible live hen would have.

Gene Nunnery called them vagabond gobblers if I'm not mistaken. You're on their way from point A to point B or you listen to them gobble unsuccessfully. In this case, I believe this ole boy had his eyes on some female company he was following but sure wanted us to join. :funnyturkey:

Kenny Morgan in "Turkey Hunting a One Man Game" called a gobbler like that a 'circuit rider'.

Another great episode, Dave,...but man, you are wearing me out just watching them! I don't know how you keep going day after day like that. :o
Obviously, Dave (world champion) and Chubbs (not far behind) are tremendous callers. For all of us below their level, there is no reason to be assume that, because a gobbler does not come to your calling, it is because you didn't call well enough. Sure, there are going to be times where being able to make exactly the right sound at the right time is going to make a difference. Just as assuredly, there area also going to be lots of times that being able to make a particular noise with a call is going to have absolutely no impact in success or failure in a hunt.
I will even take the "calling ability" concept one step further. I have spent fifty years hunting with callers of all levels and abilities. Most or many of those hunts, I encourage them to call when we are working a gobbler. Because of those experiences, I can tell you without question that turkeys respond to what THEY want to come to, not necessarily what we hunters think they should respond to.
I can't tell you how many times I have been working a gobbler with another guy calling with me and have said to myself,..."there is no way in hell that this gobbler is going to come to that calling", only to have the bird come marching in gobbling and strutting to the most gawd-awful turkey calling you could imagine.
I will say this boys and girls, try to become the best caller you can,...there are times when that will make a difference. But just being able to sound like a turkey (there are a million different turkey voices out there) is not nearly as important as knowing what to say and when and where to say it. And perhaps even more important is putting the pieces together during your conversation with a gobbler as to what he really wants to hear.
:newmascot: :newmascot:
I agree. Everyone should attempt to be a proficient as possible at every aspect of the game but being a champion caller not necessary to kill gobbler consistently.
Seen the latest and you are in the addiction. I like your never give up attitude. I get frustrated watching but that is what makes killing one so worthwhile. Like a hunter once said they are so beautiful but I love standing on their neck more. It's funny how a bird with a brain the size of half a walnut can make us look so inept at times. Gotta love it! :funnyturkey: That's what keeps us comin back for more.

Squirrel is a real hoot. I bet he is a lot of fun to do anything with.
Thanks for sharing dave.
41 is superlative, nice birds, splendid hunts, doesn't get any better, or does it, here's to #42 !
Day 41 was AWESOME !! Congrats to both on 2 great gobblers. looking forward to 42... I was stunned that the yote didn't get it.
Stayed up late and got up early to have another ready today. Day 42 is encoding now. Hopefully be up shortly.
Two words for episode 41,....AWE SUMM! That was indeed what turkey hunting is supposed to be about and how it should be done! There are few times when a video makes me feel like I was right there with you guys,...and this was one of them. I could smell those woods and feel the excitement and tension of those hunts! Fine stuff, David and crew!
That, my friends, is what turkey hunting is all about,...from A to Z! The only problem,...if you want to call it that,...is that it clearly demonstrates just how difficult it is to get your typical "kill shot" footage when you are TRULY turkey hunting.
Thanks for taggin' along guys! I'll be working on the next one and hopefully have it up on Monday!
Keep em coming Dave. Getting me thru my lunch hour and slow times at work :icon_thumright:

I totally stopped watching hunting videos years ago until I found out about them on this forum. The best turkey hunting videos I've ever watched. Keep them coming!
Episode Day 46: I've watched the segment at the 16 minute mark several times and can't figure out what happened there. It looked to me like Squirrels shot was low, the gobbler flew, and then it sounds like another shot from somewhere and the gobbler folds and goes to the ground,...then flies again. Maybe its just the perspective of the camera angle, but it sure looked like that bird was shot out of the air with a second shot after the first miss. ...?????

I guessing what you heard is the footage and pitch of the shot picking back up to "real time" after I slowed it down to see the miss. The gobbler did drop back down to the ground to avoid some limbs I'm guessing then quickly got another push off and over the next ridge he flew.
It's hard to imagine a day can be so good, yet so bad as day 46. Whew. I'll be okay if I never have to go through that again.

This was exactly my thought. I initially thought that Squirrel missed, and Dave crunched him in the air. Then I thought squirrel followed his first shot with a fatal shot in the air. When I slowed it down I could see the bird get airborn after hitting the ground, but he sure did fall awkwardly.
We have all missed, and it has sucked every time.
I see Squirrel had a red dot sight (?) on his gun. Was the sight off, did he ever check the zero of the sight? Or does he think he outright missed both birds. Hey we all missed. Great videos, keep em comin. It is a marathon, not a sprint. Time to sleep after the season.
I've been really enjoying the videos.
I'm surprised by the amount of calling
you do to these Public birds. I guess I've just always been a lot more conservative. I do see where you gave the silent treatment on day 46, now that's more my style. I've learned from watching you that maybe I can be more aggressive.
I do have a good challenge/suggestion for you Dave. Next season, come try the Big South Fork in TN. I have turkey hunted numerous public lands in numerous states and this home ground of the BSF still kicks my butt on a regular basis. I'd love to see how you would tackle it.

I've been really enjoying the videos.
I'm surprised by the amount of calling
you do to these Public birds. I guess I've just always been a lot more conservative. I do see where you gave the silent treatment on day 46, now that's more my style. I've learned from watching you that maybe I can be more aggressive.

Yes, some of the BSF is in KY and a large portion is on the TN side.

Episode Day 46: I've watched the segment at the 16 minute mark several times and can't figure out what happened there. It looked to me like Squirrels shot was low, the gobbler flew, and then it sounds like another shot from somewhere and the gobbler folds and goes to the ground,...then flies again. Maybe its just the perspective of the camera angle, but it sure looked like that bird was shot out of the air with a second shot after the first miss. ...?????
This was exactly my thought. I initially thought that Squirrel missed, and Dave crunched him in the air. Then I thought squirrel followed his first shot with a fatal shot in the air. When I slowed it down I could see the bird get airborn after hitting the ground, but he sure did fall awkwardly.
We have all missed, and it has sucked every time.
I honestly think he had no idea what had just happened and had pitched up, landed and was going to do the ole "longneck" to see what that loud noise was. Then as soon as he hit the ground he saw Squirrel charging from the tree and decided it as time to exit left.
Poor Squirrel!!
More great video. What I admire is that you live and breath turkey hunting. It is an admirable trait. :newmascot:
Dave, you showed some conflict with other public hunters in earlier videos but not the more recent ones. Did it lessen or go away entirely as you moved to different areas?
Love the series. Thanks for doing it.

Hunting pressure fades quickly after the first couple weeks. Pair that with our adjustments to avoid popular areas (they seem to shift) and we have fewer "run ins." And pressure will more often than not be much reduced once you get out of the southeast.
Thanks for watching!
Day 48.49 is up now!

I'm just glad most folks are slow/poor learners. Dave is putting on one of the best turkey schools to ever exist and if viewers really did some studying, they'd be able to 'up' their public land turkey killing game by tenfold!
Keep them coming...
I'm wondering if camper shells and mountain bike sales will spike next spring with all the people trying to copy what Dave is doing lol.

I've been camper she'll camping for over 30 years. It's not for everyone but keeps you in the game and gets you more rest do to less driving. You will always be first at the gate if you never leave. I love the simplicity and ability to relocate hunting areas with truck camping. I will always hunt this way.]
Episode 53,...classic. ...Last five minute commentary under the rock with the gobbler,...exceptional! You really summed up the emotions and internal conflict hunters have (or should have) about taking the life of the animals we hunt. I have had the same discussion with myself many times over the decades,...and with the same conclusions. Well done, David, well done.

Gotta love second chances, the birds do the darndest things at times. They always seem to leave us at a loss for words. Near the end of TENTH LEGION Tom Kelly talks about letting a tough bird walk after battling a few times and he says' I let him walk under the gun, with the safety off , at thirty yards and didn't shoot. And ruined it. For the past four days that turkey and I had possessed each other-and I had degraded him by letting him go. I know that I had ruined it the moment he was gone, for you may take all the pleasure you choose in losing, so long as you lose. You cannot throw the game. He didn't even know I was there, but I did and cheapened him by giving him a gift he dldn't ask for. I could not have demeaned him more if I had caught him by the foot in a steel trap and beaten his head with an ax handle.' You kinda said the same thing. By the way a helluva hunt!
Just finished 53 myself. Much respect for the gobblers and Dave.
I too have restled with letting them go. I never really thought I was not giving my best, if I would have done that. I really like how Dave laid that out there. Keep up the good work, I appreciate all you do with the pinhoti project.

I know that story well and believe that is what planted that seed that grew within my lil mind on that wandering under the rock. Tom Kelly and Gene Nunnery have every ounce of my respect when it comes to putting emotions into print.
Thanks for keeping up guys! I'm dropping days 56.57.58 today. Then it's one more day around home before a run at WA, ID and MT.
Dave, I noticed in one of the videos Chub put a trumpet in his vest, but I have not seen y'all use one on camera. Do you ever use one?
I'm more of a wingbone guy myself. But yes, I use one on occasion. It's just rare you see me using anything but a mouth yelper on camera due to me running the calls and the camera. I need help with the camera. :toothy9:

That's why I'm fall hunting for a hen - so I can make a hen wingbone call. I've made two - one for me and one for Aaron. Love running em and they sure work!

That would have been day 57 or 58.
Great videos and Dave has a very good ratio of hunts to killing a gobbler. Only question were was the crow call in all these hunts lol.

Seeing those Washington hunts really makes me miss the mountain hunts I've had in NM. Is it spring turkey season yet?
Turned off DirecTV to save some money and hooked my computer to my TV so now I will be able to watch some more of these.
Really enjoying the Washington hunts. My wife watched with me and is wanting to go with me this Spring now.

Y'all that are getting your wives to watch are some lucky men! I've tried and tried to get mine to and still can't. I think anyone that is on the fence about hunting should watch this series so they can see what it means to the true hunters, not the people that go out twice a season and sit over a bait pile (as is evident in the videos), but the ones the devote their lives to it and would be lost without it. These videos are absolutely phenomenal and have me looking more and more forward to next spring!
My wife watches with me and even lies to me that my calling sounds like Dave.

My GF wants to go out with me next year, though not with a gun, we will bring a camera. She is not an anti hunter she just does not like the idea of an animal getting hurt. She drives me nuts though because she swerves to miss squirrels.

Watching the Maine Hunt now. Dave is it public land? Was expecting mountainous terrain and surprised to see farmland. Also, what time of year is it? May?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
In Maine, if it's not posted it's available for the public to hunt- so I guess that makes it public. In my Maine experience this is where I've spent majority of my time. It's smaller woodlots and lots of 'bogs' or swampy areas- basically moose habitat. Which is why they have moose I suppose.
Welp, the end has come. . . . the last day of the Pinhoti Project is currently encoding. It will be up for your viewing pleasure in a few hours.
:thanks: to those that have followed along for the journey.
I'm looking forward to it!
Dave, I know that you put a lot of effort into documenting all these hunts so thank you for the entertainment. It is the only series I have managed to watch from start to finish. Please pass along my thanks to Chubs, Squirrel, and Courtney as well. It was well done, and if nothing else you have captured the definition of a turkey hunting addict on video.
Enjoyed the ride. A real group of videos that illustrate the essence of a proper turkey hunt. No decoys; no fanning; no popup blinds; very good calling. Congratulations on a very successful season.
Dave thanks so much for taking us along on your journey this past season. I enjoyed every episode. I think you capture the essence of true turkey hunting. Also appreciated the respect you have for the bird we get the awesome pleasure to pursue every spring. I love that!
Yes, and please tell Chubbs, Squirrel and Courtney thank you as well.
I know it was a pain at times taking a camera but I do hope there will be a season 2.
:thanks:
YES Sir thank you for the adventure!!!!!??what happened to videos 69-72??
I very much enjoyed the season. I watched every episode at least once. I learned a lot and feel like I know y'all even though I have never met you. Hope you do it again in 2019.
Thank you Dave! Job well done.

Enjoyed every moment of the entire season.
Thanks for doing a fantastic job and sharing it with the rest of us.
A bittersweet afternoon watching the last of the season. I feel the same. I will NEVER tire of turkeys. Deer yes. But never turkeys.

Can't believe its over, great hunting videos, great job, looking forward to see day one of 2019 Turkey Season !
Followed along the whole way and I must congratulate you for a successful season behind the camera, let alone the gun. The Pinhoti Project has by far been my favorite hunting video series I've ever seen, I've certainly enjoyed it every step of the way. It's great to see how you tackle certain situations and I'd hope and can remember to bring in some of the things I've learned from you with me into the spring woods. Looking forward to seeing what Pale Horse puts up from your Goulds trip. Thanks for sharing your journey, and as others have said, I hope to see it continue into 2019.
Derek Anderson
Pinhoti is the real deal for sure. I keep watching episodes over and over and I've recommended to a bunch of friends. Like others have said, sad to see the season end and hoping you can keep it up next season. I'm like a sponge for "real" turkey hunting. No advertising. No plugs. Just pure, real turkey hunting.
Love the interaction between you and Squirrel and Chubs. Great stuff man!!!
Thanks for keeping it real.
Thanks a ton guys for those that followed the journey! :thanks:
I made myself not watch these videos so I wouldn't lose interest in deer hunting. Ready to get them started this week! Looks like it was an awesome journey.
I started watching them last week, one of the best series of videos I have ever seen its real..He reminds me of my longtime turkey huntin partner just out there enjoying it and getting it done. :you_rock:

Dave, I'm not on face book but i did hear about your last post from a friend. I feel there does not need to be any changes if Pinhoti 19 does happen (which I really hope it does) because you brought us the videos as it really happens in the woods. I really enjoyed every video and I appreciate you doing this. I know its a busy time of year with deer season ending and entering the holidays but i'm curious if you might still be planning a vest dump and showing us the alterations you guys make to your vests. THANKS and I have learned a few things from your videos.

Thanks! There will be some more instructional stuff coming out in the future and a vest dump may very well be a part of that. Just got the website published yesterday (finally) and trying to wrap my head around a Pinhoti 2019. It's a lot to think about.
Do it brutha'!!!
I can't imagine what kind of determination that takes to video the entire season. Don't know if I could do it, BUT, everybody loves those vids. so much...I know they've filled plenty of evenings in my dull little life watching you and Chubbs and Squirrel... :fud: :OGani:

Throw Western MD in the mix. It will either make me feel good or bad about myself :toothy12:
Home sick with nasty upper respiratory infection and started from day one. Up to, I think day 8 with the swamp buggy with squirrel.
This is awsome!!! Should have done this when I was younger but we didn't have Turkeys until 1998 and haven't missed an opportunity since.
Thanks Cove for making me feel like I'm with you.
That's the thing that I think separates Pinhoti from everything else. It's like you're there...Good stuff!!!

Thanks for the entire series Dave.
I just had knee surgery and spent the last three days watching every video from the first till the last while I'm laid up.
Should be healed up and ready by season, the videos sure have me fired up about going. All I can think about after that last hunt of the year is the first one of next year. Nothing I'd rather do than hunt turkeys.
Hope you guys decide to do it again.
Really enjoyed it.
