It's hard to really describe, and I can't seem to figure out how to put a sound file on here. Gray slate is going to have the more traditional type sound, lower and more mellow in comparison. Red, green, and purple are all more dense, and will tend to be higher pitched. They each have their own unique sound though, and a lot depends on how the maker makes the call. I've heard gray slates that would pierce your eardrums, and I've heard some reds that you would swear were gray.
