Seems like a May hunt. Birds went dead silent after fly down

It is dead here. First time I've never not seen a Tom within the first hour of my hunt. I've seen one lone hen.

When's your next chance to go

Went back out that afternoon with my nephew. Skunked again. Gonna try it again this afternoon, then Saturday morning if necessary.

I hope you get some action! I was cleaning out the barn where I hunt today and saw 6 gobblers.

Tonight was finally able to seal the deal. 7/8 Spurs, 8 7/8 beard, 20.5 pounds. Not a big bird, but the first one I've had a shot at in 6 sits. I've been out morning and night the last few nights. Birds are grouped up as soon as they fly off the roost. This morning I finally had some gobble back, but nothing would commit. Heard multiple hens, tried irritating then so they would come and bring some Toms with them, but again, nothing. I have yet to see strutting birds in my normal fields on the way to work, so I wasn't sure if it was still early or the weather really has them off. I've been taking my nephew with me to put him in his first bird, but we just didn't have any luck. Unfortunately, he didn't come with me tonight. I would have loved for him to get this bird!

So here's tonight's hunt. Abandoned the blind and camera. Just went out with the gun and my two decoys. Sat in a spot around 6pm on a lane just outside a corn field. Heard a hen clucking, so I placed my decoys the and tried to bring her in. Nothing. Decided to move closer to another field and woods. Put my decoys out about 8 yards and waited. Called off and on for about an hour. At about 7:15, I notice something to my right, cresting a hill. Sure enough, silently, in comes a turkey. He would come, stop, turn, wait, then come some more. At first, I want sure if it was a Tom or a hen. From the point of the hill to my decision was probably 100 yards. He slowly made his way in, and about 40 yards away, started to strut. Game on!
This is the first time in a long time that I've had one come in while on the ground. I was frozen on the ground, not daring to move. He was coming from my right, and there was no way to move the gun without being busted, so I just sat and stared frozen in anticipation. He passed in front of me at 10 yards, head as red as could be. Like a scene from an Edgar Allan Poe book, every time he would stop, I was sure it was because he could hear my heart thumping.
Finally, at 8 yards he passed in front of me, full strut, spitting and drumming. I could actually hear each tail feather rustle against the next. He split my decoys and decided to first put on a show for my hen. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity of not moving a muscle his head disappeared behind his fan, and I brought up my gun. I think it was about 7 yards, he strutted in a full circle, and when his face came around again, I shot him in it. Dropped in his tracks! I was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief. Not a huge bird, but a challenging bird and a fantastic hunt. Would have loved to heard him gobble, but the visual show he put on was good enough. Only thing that could have been better is if my nephew would have pulled the trigger. Next weekend he will...I hope!
