Trying to stay away from places to buy turkey stuff. This time of the year I am all antsy and feed the need with buying stuff I "have to have". Well I been pretty good so far this year. Just bought a Fowler striker, some shotgun wads, and a couple face masks (I am a face mask snob and the first I bought I really did not care for after wearing it a bit. Love the other.) Only thing left is some shot, hope to buy 3 pounds here soon. Good luck to any of your fellows fighting the urge as well!
I think most feel the urge. Scouting feeds the need. Regardless most guys buy things they don't need. Think about it last day of season they were fine n opening day which is only one hunt day later we feel we need stuff.
I'm def guilty n enjoy all of it
I've bought more than I needed. Bought a Roger Latham box yesterday. I have pretty much changed out my whole friction call setup even though I don't use them that much. I still need shells and mouth calls. My son picked up a couple of Hooks calls yesterday and he will be home this evening so I'll see how I like those. Hopefully they sound good and I can have him pick me up some more next week and then I'll be down to just shells.
I also just finished a conversation with my cousin. We were leaning toward a MS hunt but now it's looking like we may just cancel. I really want to hunt out west for a Merriams next year so I need to start saving now!
No doubt I'm addicted to buying gear I really don't NEED. It's even worse every year when the new bows are released!
I used to buy bows quite frequently myself. That's a bad habit!
I'm good, might get some shells but thats about it.
Just tried out some Hooks. I really like that 4 reed v. Heartthrob was pretty good. I'll pick up some more of those. Think I just found a new brand.
Hooks are priced very well also!

5.99 at a bow shop in Jonesboro, AR. I've never seen them sold around here and lucky for me I'll be sending my son back to college Monday with a little extra cash.
I've bought another mask, jacket, trumpet, 3 pounds of shot and a pair of gloves. Almost bought another shotgun.

You guys load your own shells? That's getting serious! I only get to kill 2 birds each year in MO, a box of shells will last me a few years.
This will be my 2nd season rolling my own. I chased numbers for years and after being disappointed in what I could buy - made the decision to try tss. It's great stuff. My 20 gauge now out performs what my 12 use to do with 2 7/16 Nitros.
I jumped to loading my own because I got tried of Hevi Shot prices going up and the pattern counts going down. Now that I have what I need it does not cost me any more to reload than it did to buy Hevi. I am also shooting a 20 ga instead of 12.

Couple more Hooks calls and some shells and I'm good. My son is gonna pick up an Executioner 2 and a 3 reed v. I'll likely be done. I did add this but more for sentimental reasons and not sure if I'll take it to the woods.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170226/9caff45612ad202a07054f31275e0e77.jpg)

I definitely feel the need! Haha I have been picking up a few things here and there. Got a new adjustable face mask and a green leaf hoodie on order from the mossy oak store. Picked up a gobbler lounge and a couple boxes of shells. Also made a few turkey totes. 20 more days!

A new turkey hunting shotgun has arrived.
In all my zealousness I did not post what it is. BPS field 20 guage.

Just ordered a Burris red dot for my model 37. Supposed to be here in a week or so. Hopefully it's as good as they say. Going to use it w longbeard 5s. Gun likes that load. Got some stuff on my mind, lost a second dog in a week's time. Both old dogs. But I'll be mounting it asap
Just order some shot. Got some to get started but like to keep it stocked. Also, we are going to get that Marine's gun shooting lights out!

Thinking about putting a red dot atop of my 11-87. Anyone use or have used vortex venom or Burris fast fire? Figured I'd get some opinions. Thanks

I. Just ordered the fast fire but it won't be here til the weekend. Let ya know once I try it
I had an FFIII, didn't care for it. Things I like - Turkeys looked cool with a dot on their heads, it was on no matter the position your head was in as long as the weapon was upright, and held it's zero. Things I didn't like - relied on batteries, made me baby the gun for fear of knocking it off (maybe just an unnecessary mental thing), when I would crawl or set the gun in grass it would get dirty, cost me a bird in KS cause I crawled thru a field then couldn't see thru it, requires more maintenance then my iron sights.
I've tried scopes before and feel like they just aren't for me on turkey guns, so my opinion may not be unbiased.
Never tried one of those and may like it better. Did try a truglo one and did not care for it. Really babied it and did not like the battery idea. I am a scope guy though.
I like a plain old scope. To me it's no different than the scope on my deer rifle or my muzzleloader. I exercise the same amount of care. Bought a red dot once but the battery thing is what concerned me. I was always afraid I would forget to turn it off and a few years while hunting over a field with a friend a group of birds slipped in on us and he shouldered his gun only to find his red dot was off and had to lower it to cut it on, thank God for the stake out blind and dekes because they were his saving grace for him to do all that and still kill the gobbler with hens.
I bought a muller quickshot a few months ago to try out but after mounting it I did not like it. It sat up to high. Sold the mueller and bought a scope. Really like the scope so far.

Those are my worries with it. I've always just shot with a bead. But reliability does it hold zero and battery life are my two main concerns. I would probably leave the dot on most of the time while hunting and always carry a spare. But if battery life isn't good and have to change them all the time that would get annoying. Looks like I have some research to do lol
A scope is good but some of the same issues apply. My brother has hunted for years w an inexpensive Tru glo red dot. Changed the batteries each spring and has had zero issues. W today's loads some exactness in poi is required n to me having multiple guns to chose from means it's not my only choice today. If it sits too high I'm not going to like it either n it'll wind up on my daughters buck mark pistol.
Both have pros and cons. A scope needs to start around 1.5 to 1.75 and really don't need any thing past 4x. If your eye relief is set and you can focus on your target with both eyes open a scope can help you out in low light conditions as well as being able to see a bird as he is slipping in at a distance. Only draw back on a scope is not to have it at high magnification, if a bird shows up close you may not be able to see him . Scope needs to be properly mounted so recoil does not knock it off. On cold days do not breath any air in direction of scooe if your trying to get on target , tuff to see when glass fogs up. Beauty of red dot is its small and light , once you have it zeroed regardless of how you have the weapon pointed at the target as long as the dot is on target it will be hit. You cannot do that with iron sights or a scope. As far as batteries goes, the better the red dot the longer the battery life is. After red dot is zeroed even if you battery runs out if you keep the birds head in the center of the optic you will hit your target. I put a tr 25 on my son's 20 guage and I told him to shoot at the target without the dot being on. I told him to center in the optic and shoot. It was not dead center but the target head was smashed. Regardless of what you get I hope you have a successful season.
good info here
I have been using a 4x simmons scope for a couple years now. I am finally having my Benelli SuperNova drilled/tapped so I can remove the saddle mount. Using a 1 piece DNZ mount to eliminate points of failure.
Having poor eye sight the scope has definitely assisted me with finding my target in thick cover.
I need to remember to add some fog proofing to it before next week.
ddavis finally convienced me to buy a new turkey call.. went with a MadHatter 3.5" copper over glass in cocobolo. I have never really used metal before but have heard lots of good things.
Got that fastfire mounted n spent an hour n multiple breaks just to get the battery cover on. I'm used to threading things so I was babying it not to strip it. It'd do fine without the battery, once battery was installed the cover wouldn't catch. After the hour I finally miracously got it.
Turned it in n it looked good. Turned it to a brighter setting n there were lines all over the glass n looked like paint splatter all over. Little lower got a cool comet image. At the automatic setting it seemed ok. In the daylight outside it seemed ok.
Went to shoot it in. First shot w light hand loads the battery cover n battery came off. Just like the sight is about to come off this gun.
Anyone who uses one best be prepared to wrestle w it. Calling Burris Monday. Hopefully they send me another. Going on my daughters Buckmaster hunter. It's a .22 pistol w a rail already attached. I need things more bullet proof. Even w old eyes I'm not up for this. Maybe next year I'll try a scope.
Don't do it Bill
Good luck. I tried it and it wasn't for me either
Good to know. Sucks about your troubles though. If i go the red dot route I will get the Vortex over the fast fire. Thanks

Yea both made in the Philippines anyway I believe. Cool update is that Jrrodc informed me you can simply return stuff where I got it. Labels already printed. Yeehaw!
Going to try and make it to visit Jack Lewis and get a tube call from him. Figure that will give me something to pass my time until season opens. Never tried one before so it should be interesting.

I've had this all of an hour and can get some nice yelps. There's a lot of different sounds that this call can make from high and clear to a big break with some rasp. I'm not real consistent yet but I'm gonna like this call. My first time running a tube call.
Mr Lewis is such a nice fellow with a lot of knowledge and talent. He made this call while I was there.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170314/c68d4e22e2240f5bbe5c10bd2bc1ead5.jpg)

Very cool about the call n the wads. Next year I may dabble in making some. I think tss comes in 7 n that's the smallest size we can use. Nothing I do cept waterfowl n turkey I buy. Make arrows, flies, use to mold black powder balls, most my guns haven't ever seen a factory load rifle, pistol or shotgun except for the previously mentioned rounds.
Well bit the bullet and picked this up today. Stayed away from the Burris because of Mikes experience and the fact the vortex has way more brightness settings. So far it looks great. Seems well built. Going to get it mounted next week after I get the gun drilled and tapped.

Okay I'm done with the buying season but this forum got me thinking about trying something on my shotgun. I was at a gun shop this weekend and they had a rail and scope that I had been contemplated. Gonna dial it in this week and see how I like it. My Williams Firesights are still on it if I back out.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170403/10060b5b08540f96782847e599522a41.jpg)

Got that scope nearly sighted today. I made up some targets but ran out before I was convinced it was dialed in the best it could be. We've had T-storms most of the day so I quit. It seems like it's gonna work out for me. It has a lot of eye relief. If it holds up to a good round of turkey loads, I'll see how I get along with it in the woods.
