What chalk or does it matter for box calls?
Not all chalk is created equal. Personally I use rain chalk for my box calls. Seems to last longer, requiring fewer re-chalking through the day.
The old red brick chalk is some of the best if you can find it and white is pretty good also , chalk plays major part in the play and grip of the lid on the rails .. David Halloran sells some blue that pretty good also.
I found a box of Dixon red half moons. No longer made and considered the best. After using it I would have to agree.
I've been told to use white railroad chalk.

I have used the red mentioned above, the blue half moon chalk and the H.S. Strut brown chalk and I feel the red chalk is the best in most cases. I have a scratch box that does not like the red or brown chalk at all.
For those that use the white Railroad Chalk, which name brand do you use? Not talking about Rainchalk, but the real white "Choo Choo" stuff. Thanks in advance.
Dixon red and white railroad chalk is all I typically use.

No problem, the Dixon chalk is great stuff.
I prefer the half moon chalk, but if the round sticks, is all you can come by I'd run it.

Handsdown, the 1/2 moon Dixon which is no longer made the best.
TJ recommended to me Irwin Strait-Line Railroad.

I think you are right, but I have used the orange 1/2 moon which I do know isn't made any more, wonder why they would discontinue the orange and white?
I think they still make the half moon white as well. Definitely can't find the orange anymore.
That don't make the old half moon brown anymore , i still have 3 full pieces of the old brown , which is good chalk ... I gave one of these old pieces to TJ at this pass NWTF Convention.
I was told by an old timer who made calls to never use colored chalk because it contains small amounts of oil and will affect the sound over time. I see a lot of people use colored. Anyone ever heard this before? Thanks
