Title: Single shot 28 gauge or .410 recommendations
Post by: Meleagris gallopavo on June 07, 2021, 02:19:58 PM
I'm considering moving to a single shot 28 gauge or .410 shotgun.  The requirements are a pistol grip or thumbhole stock, screw in choke tubes and it being drilled and tapped.  I want something short and light, which most of them will be anyway.  what's out there?

I'm thinking the pistol grip or thumbhole stock may be too much to expect...

One option that has everything except the thumb hole/pistol grip is the CVA Scout. Check out my thread for some more info and pictures.

I just found out that Savage/Stevens has a 301 .410 turkey thumbhole model.

I just recently added a Rossi Turkey Tuffy 410 to the mix and really like it. It has pistol grip, drilled and tapped with mount (need to loctite all screws), screw in choke, super light, but the barrel is 26". Could possibly be cut down?

The blue collar outdoor guys have done a lot of reports on the 301 and the tuffey. FYI

Thanks!  I actually have watched a few this evening.  I'm leaning to the Rossi Tuffy more and more.

I have an email in to Sumtoy about possibly having the barrel shortened.  Not quite sure I need to do that though.  Blue Collar guys showed it shot pretty good right out of the box.  I've heard the Rossi has a better trigger than the Savage 301.  The rail on the Rossi is lower profile too.  Not a big fan of rail mounts so I may check with Sumtoy on that too.

My main motivation is that I want to carry as little as possible turkey hunting next year.  I already hunt with an 835 that I put only one shell in (magazine stop keeps shells from feeding and after 2 gunsmiths and brand new replacement parts I still can't get it to work).  So I'm already carrying a single shot.  The gun is heavy and clunky and the TSS shells are expensive for the 3.5" 12 gauge.  I think I'll be fine with the distance and shot selection I take.  I carry a turkey chair which is counter intuitive but my back and butt demand it.  Probably going vestless next year too and I'm going to get a Glenda Green minimalist satchel for my calls.  After every season I think about what I didn't like about the season I just had and the main thing I'm coming up with is carrying weight and using a vest.

no single shot. Just the only option I knew of for a 410 with a pistol grip that hadn't been mentioned

Oddly enough I can't find a Stevens 301 thumbhole turkey .410 for sale online.  They're all sold out.  Not that I need it anytime soon.
