The 1 7/8oz load of #5 is hard to find. Anyone have better results with one over the other?
I always shoot the lower payload, higher velocity load if it will pattern for penetration.
I'm the opposite. There's no way a bird walks away from low velocity. Imo it another marketing hype.
That being said w a little tighter choke (.665) I actually had better results w the lower payload. W .675 choke the heavier loads shined.
Both are great but I've had better and more consistent patterns with the 1 7/8 loads
I choose low velocity higher payload as well.

I got 160`s with a .665 trulock, 1 7/8 load, Mike
Both are great loads, but I've had better luck with lower velocity and heavier as well. Particurally in the #5's for whatever reason.
Never tried the heavier loads.
The 1 3/4 oz. load in my 24" Browning Gold with Star Dot tube prints somewhere in the 160s so don't see any reason to try the 1 7/8 oz. load.
My Weatherby 459 and IF Choke definitely shoots a lot better with the 1 7/8 load

What is the constriction on that choke? just curious did you mean IC as in Indian Creek
I shoot the 1 7/8 6s in a 3 inch shell. It is an old single shot, 3 inch chamber threaded in Rem. choke. With a Sum toy .665 it shoots a little over 200 in a 10 inch circle. The 5s also shoot a nice pattern but I really don't remember the exact numbers. I think the 5s were a little over 150. I went with the 6s because they are the best lead pattern I ever shot. Every turkey I shot with them was 30 to 40 yards and was drt.
Got the best results with 1 3/4 ounce
I had better patterns with the 1 3/4 oz #6 vs 1 7/8 oz. With the 1 3/4's i got 225 in the 10 at 40. With 1 7/8 i was around 180. All shot through a Remington 870 Supermag with a 26" barrel and IC .665 choke. I also shot the 3 1/2" #6 and only for 20 more pellets. Figured the 3 1/2's was not worth the recoil!!
I get around 220 with a titewad in my 870 with 1 3/4 6's. Good enough for me.
Yes IC choke .665

2018 thread?
To the OP... Did you ever try the 1 7/8 load?
I haven't done any testing yet. But when I get around to it I think my approach will be based on % of shot. Instead of counting pellets and just stating a number I will figure out what % of the total payload is inside a 10" circle.
