Nice to be alive and preparing for another Spring season. Had a couple warm days last week and sure enough one was gobbling up on the ridge behind the house. I think he was the early bird.
Its turned back off cold and have not heard any at home or on the farm since.
With a forecasted high of 72 this Sunday, I believe the woods will start to light up here in VA. Plan to be out Sunday and Monday AM listening.
Got a couple on trail cam....Going out Sat am and Sunday am to Listen as well.
Have not heard any but have seen them fighting
Went out this morning it was in the low 40's with fog/mist in SWVA. Ended up hearing one bird gobble once and that was it
Sunday AM listened to two gobble off and on for about 20 minutes, heard the first gobble at 7:30AM. It was foggy and overcast. Getting alot of trail cam pics of these birds, still grouped up with 5 longbeards and 1 jake.
I went out Saturday and did not hear any gobble. Around 8:30 I road around and saw a bunch of birds feeding. I have seen some gobblers starting to show up in fields alone.
Nary a bird to be seen or heard Sunday.
Been out the last 2 mornings in heard 5 total not had to make them gobble
What area are you in Brizendine? I'm down in SWVA and they have still been pretty tight lipped for the most part so far here
Haven't been able to get out in the mornings, due to work. I saw this flock on the way home this evening. Two gobblers in the bunch.
I was sitting in the road when I took this crappy cell phone picture.
I gave a couple of yelps, using my voice. Sounded like a sick turkey being strangled, but sure enough, one of the longbeards answered.
First gobble I've heard this year! C'mon April 13!
Edit: Won't let me post the pic. Not a very good one anyway. About 25 turkeys in the flock.
I'm out of the norther neck in between the two rivers
Wind blow party good today never head one
Want out again this morning heard one little breezy 41 temp driven back home saw one in a field blowed up with few others
Heard on this morning in central va. Only gobbled once
Went out this morning in Prince William County and heard a couple gobbling really good. The wind was still around which didn't help. Also seen one around 9 alone.
Hard a few this morning one was rocking it it was 29 out this morning
Birds were on fire this morning!!!! Great roost and ground gobbling
Vaturkeyhnyr,
Sir, Sh-h-hush. € ;-)) Kidding.
Was 28* on this side of the State this morning. No talking going on, at least in my miniscule AO.
Heard some gobbles this morning. :z-flirtysmile3: Sporadically from 7:05 until I left the area at around 8:30.
Temp:32 degrees
Location: National Forest, Shenandoah Valley
I'm in Virginia Beach. Hunted Cavalier WMA and Chickahominy WMA last year. Anyone have any info on public land birds in this area?
Some ground gobbling on Saturday, got to watch a group fly down 50 yards behind me. Had no idea they were there until about 7:40 when they pitched down. Pretty windy where I was at, driving home saw a lone gobbler in a field around 8AM. Sunday heard one gobble once at 7:24. Did some road scouting this morning and spied a large flock with a couple of strutters up the road about 1/8 mile from where I hunt, hoping they break up a little and a gobbler or two moves down my way.
Central va one gobbled 6 times, no ground gobbling
No gobbles this morning. Did find some serious scratch though.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190324/c82666f39ff6f0e115760aed8be5f81e.jpg)

Nothing but some old scratching this Sunday. Nice day tho
Saturday morning some gobbling around 7:15AM, pretty sure one was on my side of the road, birds were roosted low from the wind we had Friday. Monday AM some decent gobbling on an adjacent property to where I hunt. Saw a lone hen in a field at another spot I hunt around 8AM.
Starting to look better(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190328/dba57486485f1610793aab5c1b639243.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190328/842127a2ec7e50e5fc046e1b815c0949.jpg)

They were talkin this morning. Really good roost gobbling and was able to Hear a few once they were on the ground to see which way they were going.
Seen a big mixed flock with 4 or 5 strutters.
Seen a lone Gobbler in field last 3 mornings in Crozier. My father heard some good gobbling this week in Highland Co. Hope we can get one for the youth hunter we are taking Sat.
Went out this morning in Suffolk to listen in anticipation of youth weekend. Had two different birds gobbling on the roost. Hopefully, they cooperate this weekend.
Had one fire off yesterday morning (4/7), around 7:00. Had some hens with him.
He gobbled about six times and went quiet.
I was walking a Forest Service road when I heard him light up.
I just dropped a pin, tipped my hat and said: "See ya next week."

Birds were HOT, yesterday morning.
Heard three gobbling and called in two jakes that were settin' the woods on fire.
Roosted a bird last night. That joker was tearing it up also. Never heard one gobble that much on the roost.
He's on NF though.......can't kill him until tomorrow. :(
Good luck everyone!

They've been gobbling pretty good in Montvale. Gobble hard on roost. Very little once they hit the ground though and when they do it's only a few times until they get a hen. Still in larger flocks but starting to see them break up a bit. 9-11 has been the magic time for me. Lots of hens to go around right now.
Yesterday morning around 1030

Things in the blue ridge have quieted down big time since opening week. They're around but not gobbling at anything, even on the roost.

I agree that things have quieted down. I'm hearing one gobble about 7:30 each morning and he only gobbles once. Of course I've already killed two so that eliminates a few gobbles. Bird I'm hunting is very big. I can relax and enjoy the hunt gobble or not.
I've been off this whole week and have come close twice but the hen population is huge in my neck of the woods. Since opening day I've seen 21 hens while out, it's normal to have a few encounters but this is the most I've noted on the survey for Gary Norman in all the years I've participated in it. Just looking for a kamikaze 2 year old right now.

I've been dealing with a pile of hens as well. Been really hard to pull them in off the roost. I've had to get in really close to have a chance. Late morning I've had to move quick to a gobble before a hen rolls in. Blind calling has brought a bunch in quiet too. Good luck this week everyone.
