I have always shot Remington Nitro 4's out of my 870 SP with good luck. I was thinking of picking up a Carlson's Long Beard .660 choke. Anyone know how this choke works with 3" Nitro 4's?
what are you using for a choke now. An how does it perform?
I have a ported choke that is not marked for MFR or size. I measured it with a digital caliper and it comes in at something close to .64 I think that's too tight. I did try a few pattern shots with the #5's at 40 yds, don't have a count but group was ok but just left and down a few inches (which might have been me).
I remeasured, I think it is more like .650.
Does the choke have small drilled holes/ports or long slots?
.660, .665, even .670 might be worth a shot.
They are round holes, on a slight angle. I like how you think as far as Dia., I was thinking the same. I am going to order a Carlson's Long Beard XR which is .660, a factory Full choke (which I have) is .700. If the .660 is still too tight, I will look for a .665. I know a lot of guys like Winchester Long Beard shells, But I get shots 15-20 yards at times and am concerned about missing. My 870 is a Special Field 26" barrel model, it shoots just left and low. I verified this with both laser boar sighter and multiple shots at 10 yards (to hold pattern). Not a big problem since I know it. I just aim at top of head just a tad to the right side.

I have A jebbs .650 in A 870 as a back up gun it's tight with A 3in 6 for A good close/mid range A .660-.665 should be the ticket for you.

A .665 has always been money for me in an 870 with number 5's. There are anomalies to that and some guns like tighter. I had an 870 SM Sp that shot 2oz 3.5" supremes really well through a Hastings .650. It was really over choked in my opinion but the pattern and dead turkeys didn't lie. My brother shoots nitro 5's in a 3in 870 and a Rem super full and it shoots really well.
Thanks Bushwacker, I picked up a Remington Extra Full to test. Not sure I have seen a supper full but I am new to all these chokes. I was one of those guys that just put a choke in and went hunting. That has worked well for me so far but am going to let paper tell me what is better. Only time and testing will tell.

I've been shooting an 870 for MANY years and I have tried a LOT of different chokes and I can honestly say the RSFT .665 is very hard to beat as an all around shot friendly choke in the 12ga 870.
jus my 2cents
Remington Extra Full is .687 and probably too open for any lead load.
Super Full is .665 and probably a better choice.
OK, you guys convinced me. I have a Remington extra full and super full Turkey on order and in the mail. My Carlson's Long Beard was not shipped yet so I canceled the order. I don't have enough Supreme #4's to test shoot but will pattern both chokes with #5 Remington Nitro's. From what you guys said, sounds like the Supper Full should be the ticket. To tell the truth, I've never had any luck with that load wit any choke. When I first started I used an 870 SP with a factory full choke that came with the gun, the first year I missed a few, so I started asking around about chokes and loads, and fellow on here told me to try some Winchester XX 5's and a jelly head choke, the original one! After that I was in tall cotton like my dad used to say!

That's kinda ironic, I actually got my first bird at 40 yards with the 4's. In fact, I never missed a bird till I went to the Supremes and switched to a .650 ported chock, but I think that was the loose nut on the butt plate and not the load. This year I polished my barrel, and am switching to the Remington extra full turkey choke at .665. Now, it's up to that nut, hope it does not come lose again.
