My turn on his list is here!!! Like to here some suggestions,,, wood combos,,style etc
Not interested in a longbox though, have enough quality ones.
I've always loved his snakewood lids. I'd ask him what wood he has currently that he thinks would pair best with a snakewood lid. Maybe snakewood over mineralized poplar.
Every one I know who has got a one sider with a snakewood lid from him has loved it. Beyond that, Ed has always done me right when I've let him choose the wood combo.
His snakewood over chestnut one-sider is a outstanding caller.
Would like to know how long the wait was please?
He told me back in May that it was 8-12 months give or take.
cmh
it was around 10-13 months cant remember for sure
I requested a box call in July of 2019 and am also hearing from him today. So for me it was just over a year if I see the call within the next month or so. I'm pretty excited. I selected a one sider in whatever wood he's liking at the time.
He got a hold of me a couple weeks ago and said my name was up. I went with a bloodwood over black poplar mini boat paddle. He messaged me today and said it was done, I should have it by Saturday.

I have a snakewood over black limba one sider. Love it. He told me that he has been putting some ironwood lids on calls lately and he said they are outstanding.
Is ironwod the same has ipe
I have an ironwood/ blue mahoe from Marlin that's outstanding. Not trying to take away from Ed just saying it's a phenomenal combo.

Ironwood is also known as hop horn beam, same as used by Marlin and TJ a lot, among others. Ipe is not the same.
Even more complicated than that - hophornbeam is a species from eastern North America that locals call Ironwood, but Desert Ironwood (what most real Ironwood is cut from) is native to Arizona, California and Mexico.
Ironwood, Ipe, and Hophorn Beam

Just to clarify, what I'm using is NOT hophorn beam like Marlin and TJ use. Hophorn beam is also known as American Ironwood, and is typically lighter in color. I've been using Suriname ironwood which is much darker, even darker than the above pic (which may be the same stuff), and has some dark streaking in it. Like all ironwood, its heavy and dense and has the same sound quality as hophorn beam. I've used hophorn beam in the past but its tough to come by. As far as hophorn beam goes, there is a local callmaker around here named Ernie Moyer thats been using that on his calls for upwards of 15-20 so its not a new wood for box calls by any means, just not seen much because its tough to find. He used to sell them in local sporting goods stores when they were around but havent seen them in a while. Great sounding calls, especially for sawn and glued one siders. Ipe is totally different wood, its heavy and fairly dense but the grain of Ipe is completely different than that of ironwood. I've found Ironwood to be very similar in hardness and density to snakewood, without the figure of course.
