Title: Winchester SX3 choke recommendation?
Post by: Ocoee Ridge Runner on September 21, 2011, 06:45:01 PM
I just bought a new Winchester SX3 with 26'' barrel and am looking for some choke recommendations from guys who have this gun. I have looked through old threads and I am still unsure of what to try. Also, I am new to the forum and appreciate a great place for turkey hunting info.

675 to 680 it should shoot good.  You can drop a small amount if you want to.  I have not had any luck below 672.    It will shoot  about any shell you want to shoot with the bigger bore.

I'm shooting 280's to 290's in the 10 at 40 with a Indian creek .665 with Hevi 13 2.25 #7 and around 190 to 200 with Winchester XRHD 1.75 #6 in the same gun.

I've had the SX3 since very shortly after they were introduced. Mine is the 3" model with a 28" barrel. I also have several other Invector+ barreled guns with the over bored .742 barrels.

The turkey choke exit diameter recommended by the Browning/Winchester engineers is .640 and they recommend the "Full Strut Turkey Choke". http://www.browning-chokes.com/products.asp?cat=10551

It's a very good turkey choke when combined with 3" Hevi-13 "Bronze" shells with 2 oz. of #6 shot.

I also shoot the SSX with an e.d. of .643 and have excellent results with that choke and the Hevi-13 shotshells.

It's really all about the internal geometry of the choke and not always about the exit diameter however, so you may find another choke that will also deliver good patterns.

Thanks,
Clark

Do not know much about that gun as I am a Mossberg kind of guy but a pure gold seems to do great no matter the gun.

I have a 26" Invector+ barrel (Browning BPS) and the .670 Pure Gold works well.

.675 exit diameter chokes seem to work very well with the .742 bored barrels.  That's what I would try.  A .670 should work very well, too.  Pure Gold would be one of my first choice chokes in a .670.  Heck Bill Davis at Pure Gold might even make you a .675 choke.  But you might try the .670 Pure Gold choke first.  I would say that it might even shoot better than a .675.

Im shooting a Browning Silver 28".  The only difference Im aware of is the design of the receiver.  The barrels interchange.  Havent shot the Pure Gold, but the 670 Jelly Head produces the highest numbers.  The Kicks 675 is a more even pattern with very minimal difference (5 or less).  The 670 is too tight for me at 30 or 35 yards.  See the picture below.  Im shooting Nitro H510c 4x5x7s and getting around 250 at 40 yards. I agree with the other posters, 675 - 680.

I agree with Clark!  There is a lot more to chokes than just exit diameter.

I like the Gobbler Guns chokes.  Call Gobbler Guns and talk to them.

W the .742 bore I wouldn't go any tighter than .675.

I shot the Indian creek .655, .665, .675 and the primes jelly rad .670 through my browning silver.

I'm shooting the indian creek .675 w nitro 4x5x7 510c and I'm shooting in the 280s above 60 degrees.
In 50 degree weather I shoot in the 270s.

*all patterns achieved w a polished  barrel*

I've seen an SX3 paired with what I recall being a Hevi-shot brand choke in .665 or .664? shoot a 200 in 10" at 40 with hevi-13 2.25 #5's

Great gun. I bought one last year. I am shooting an Indian Creek .665. With Hevi Shot Hevi Blend 5/6/7 I'm getting 235 average at 40 yards.

Winchester offers there own turkey choke, it is a signature series extended (non ported) camo band tube in .660 dia..
You can view them on the Winchester web site. My SX3 with that tube and 28" bbl. puts 10 to 14 in the head and neck area at 40yds. Kent diamond shot #6 2.25oz. Let me know how that Browning full strut tube in .640 shoots..

If that's true, that's all I'd ever shoot.

I had a 24" bbl. sx2 that shot over 200 with hevi 3.5" 5s with a .675 IC or a Kicks .680. I also shot nitros in this gun, The IC.675 and Kicks.680 both outshot the rhino .670 with any load.
IMO .675-.680 is the sweet spot in the Invector + guns.
A buddy had a 24" bbl bps that gave the same results.

200 HTL #5's in 10" at 40 Yards would carry a LONG way.
