Thinking about a summer tinkering project of box calls, just for giggles. What's some common woods that are some favorites.

Neil Cost's favorite was yellow poplar.
Hard to argue with him.
Some of my favorites : walnut/poplar, walnut/cedar. bloodwood/cedar and yeloowheart/black limba... these are just a few of my favorites, it all depends on the sounds and rolling over tones of the box in what i look for in a good box...
If I could have just one wood to make calls from it would be black limba. Lots of second place finishers including cherry, poplar, walnut and sassafras to name a few.

Poplar makes a mighty fine sounding box!
I am looking for some 2"x2"x12" maybe 1 poplar and 1 other walnut and a cherry whatever I could buy to play with this summer
Thanks

Neil always said if you like the sound of a yellow poplar box when you purchase it from him you will really like it over the years when its tone mellows with age. He said it takes 2-3 years for a poplar box to really break-in and find its true voice. I, too, think yellow poplar ages well.
