Title: I'm loosing it I think
Post by: slb9981 on March 05, 2011, 06:56:13 AM
I've been turkey hunting the last 5 years. I've always used an old 870 pump with a full choke 3" shells. This year I got the urge to buy me a good shotgun. I got a sbe 2 with 24" barrel. I bought a rhino choke 0.670 and some magnum blends and some Winchester supremes to try and pattern it. I went yesterday and put 120 in a 12" square at 50 yards with the magnum blends. (is this a good pattern?) The supreme elites just didn't perform like the blends. Is this all I'm going to get out of this setup? Seems like I spent a fortune to add 10 more yards over the 870.

Thanks guys. Just wanted to make sure I'm not wasting my money. Seems to me I need to try different chokes and possibly the hevi 13 #7. But geez this is getting expensive fast

:fud: :newmascot:Those old Remingtons are hard to beat, but 120 blends @50 will work,

I would consider that marginal.
Most consider 100 in a 10" circle to be the minimum.
You may have less than that due to the larger circle.
I don't like mag blends or blends of any kind.
I think you should shoot the size pellet you think will reliably kill at the maximum range you intend to limit your shooting.
You have not got the right combo.
PS. polish your barrel.

I dont think you need to polish the barrel. I would try some smaller shot size 7's, or 8'sif your laws allow it. I have IC. .665 in mine and it does really well. However I am shooting my handloads of TSS#9's and I get over 400 in a 10" circle @40. Smaller the shot the more pellets going down range. I get right at 200 with hevi 13 #6's. I shoot 3"  2oz

Your benelli has a chrome lined barrel you dont need to polish it. i would deep clean it," scrub it very, very good". My SBEII with a 24" barrel get the best pattern's with a Indian Creek .665 and winchester elite xtend range 3.5" 2oz #6. I have tried the pure gold .670 , jellyhead .660 , comp-n-choke .658 with H-13 and the xtend range.  I would contact rhino and see if they will swap your choke for another one, maybe a .660 0r somethig.

Thats still a good 50yd pattern! If you want more pellets I would try the H13 7's. They have plenty of energy at 50yds. That Rhino is a good choke, but maybe a little open. As stated above, I would at least ask if they will swap for a .665 or .660.

Personally, I'd still want to work with it, based on a 10" circle and having a minimum of 100 in the area.
With your set up, one figures with your data, your shooting 65.4 shot in a 10" area at 50 yards.
Will it kill a bird, probably, but I'd rather have more shot than 65.4.

12"x12" area = 144 inches squared;
10" circle area =  78.5 inches squared
You shot 120 shot in 144 inches squared, so it  averages to 1.2 shot per inch squared
78.5 inches squared divided by 1.2 shot per inch squared  = 65.4 shot

The others have made some good suggestions .665 or .660 chokes and  smaller size shots.
Good luck, as that is a great gun you have .

God Bless,
David B.

It's only .83 shot per inch squared isn't it??

Yes for the 10" area,  which equals 78.5 inches squared.

.833 shot per squared inch multiplied by  78.5 inches squared = 65.39 shot in a 10" circle

I think I'm going to try an IC choke and see if that works better. Thanks guys for the input.
