Title: Dead turkey head painting
Post by: TRKYHTR on April 26, 2011, 12:49:19 AM
I decided I was going to mount 2 of the big gobblers I killed this year. 1 is going to be a dead turkey mount and the other is going to be a walking limb mount. So I bought 2 freeze dried heads from Cally Morris and got them in the mail today. I couldn't contain myself so I fired up the air compressor and started painting. This is the first freeze dried head I have painted and I like it. I can't wait to mount the turkey now. I'll do that when I get back from my SD/WY hunt. What do you think?

I know it didn't look exactly dead, they actually look ugly after their shot,  but I didn't want to make it look ugly either. I did add some purple where the blood sets. I do need to tone the red down a little. I was torn between making it look dead/ugly or making it look good. Thanks for the input. It was my first freeze dried head to paint.

OK I made it a little more dead. I should probably add some white spots to the red carnucles but I think I'll just leave it.

My opinion doesn't matter much, but I still think it looks great!

Joe, Do you have a VCR player?  If your interested (and it would not offend me if your not), I have a Cally Morris Turkey Head Painting VCR Tape that was recorded during a seminar at the World Taxidermy Show several years ago and sold by WASCO.  I don't have a VCR player any longer and have no way of converting it to a dvd.

The head does look nice though.  A little intense on the colors, but still a good job.  A really nice touch is to clean as much of the paint off of the hairs and small feathers as possible and use a women's mascare (spelling??) brush to darken them.  However, try to avoid the obvious brush strokes on the paint.
