125+ is easily doable at 35 Yards with 2 Ounces of Lead#6's.

40 Yards is much more challenging.  Your gun has to really like the choke and shell combo being used.  125 is not a given at 40.
Nothing is a given at some point. One of the first NWTF shoots that some guy named Steve Conover won was using Winchester HV #6 lead shot at 40 yards using a 650 choke I believe. With a choke from 645 -655 one of the best lead loads out there is the Win 3-1 3/4-#6 load. If I get my heart back soon I'll send you some actual prints of patterns using that combo at 35 yards. The other shell that loves being given the big squeeze is the old white in 3-1 3/4-#6 Hevi. 645-655 on avg.

BTW he only asked for numbers. I gave him some and he can do as he wishes. At whatever point he gets 120 he knows its limitations. My #s were for #6 as well.

Testing Rem 870  Kicks .655 and Hastings .665: 21in barrel, polished, forcing cone etc.

                         Winchester      1  7/8   6's      70 in a 10in circle @ 40yds
                         Winchester 1 3/4 5's and 1/7/8 5's  much less
                         Winchester Extended Range 6's   105 in a 10in circle @ 40yds

This is the double x black box red shell.  3-2-5.  If you going to shoot lead try this one.  in 5's or 6's

Just located some win 3/2/6's. Gonna run them through my .665 and .655 at 30, 35 and 40yds.

Try your HVs in th e665 as well. It sounded like that was too tight in the 655 in that gun.

With the right choke, 90-116 is doable at 40 yards with 3" Win Sup HV #5.

For me, that choke is an Indian Creek .665 in an 870.

A 35 Yard Hammer, with a little extra range.  Even the 50 Yard patterns are still half-way decent, in case you misjudge the distance really bad.

Good Luck.

Those are amazing numbers with 5's. Havent been able to come close to that with 5's out of a .665 or a .655. Best I got out of 6's @ 40 was 97.

With my 28" Barrel 3" 870, Indian Creek .665 choke, and Win Sup HV 1.75 Ounce #5's, the Best I have seen was 116 at 40, and the Worst I have seen was 90 at 35.

I really like that shell.

I also got 143 at 35 with a PMC 3-2-6 Lead shell.

For numbers, I like the Indian Creek .665

Rem 870   Kicks .655     Win XX  3/2/6   21in barrel polished/ polished forcing cone.

All of the pellets except 24 in a 10" circle @ 20 (410-415 if shot weight is correct)

254 in a 10" circle @ 30

154 in a  10" circle @ 35

97 in a   10" circle @ 40

*As good as i can get with the Rem 870 3"
*Shoot 35 and less and if i misjudge a bit i will still be in good shape.
*Used to have a Tasco Pro-point on the this gun..may put it back on as tight as this combo shoots inside 20yds.
*Thanks for the tip Sumtoy on the XX 3/2/6's.  Havent tried the XX 3/2/5's.
