Let's see some of those patterns from Federal Heavyweight #7 shot ....gun& choke info included...I'm lookin' for a reason to keep on shootin' em'....SO LETS SEE EM'!!!!!!!!!
Best #s I'm gettin' are mid-130's at BEST!!!!

Catfishlee

I would love to give them a chance if they would just offer a version without the flight control wad. All of my chokes are ported and have wad catchers in them.  There price is much better than the Hevi-13 7's and are rated at a higher velocity.

From a choke mfg. which I cannot name....the owner told me that a WHOLE LOT of folks were shooting the flitecontrol wad thru their ported tube and gettin' not just good results but FANTASTIC results....FACT IS...the reason one is not supposed to shoot this particular wad thru a ported and/or wad stripping choke is because of the way the flitecontrol wad opens rearward and uses the pressure that is created from the tube to assist in the rear-braking petals, not because of damage that may be done to a choke/barrel. This is information obtained from certain folks at Federal Ammo, and an un-named choke mfg.

Out of my 20 ga Mossberg turkey thug, with an SSX choke shooting 3-1.5-7 Federals, I get 152 in the 10" circle at a tape measured 40 yards.

I took Owlhoot's advice and purchased a Carlson's .640 non-ported turkey choke for my Remington 1187 Greenleaf w/21" barrel and patterned the 3 inch 1 5/8 ounce Federal HW #7's.  Put 183 pellets in 10" circle @ 40 yards the first shot, 165 the 2nd shot and 152 the 3rd shot.  That's a 3 shot average of 167 in the 10" @ 40 yards.   Evidently this load likes a squeaky clean barrel in my gun. This will be my dedicated field gun this season

YASSSSIIIIRRRR!!!!!! Thats great #s....I've tried them thru a Final strut .640 and got 134 ,.650 I got 135 , .655 I got 126.

I have a Remington 870 SPS and shoot the Turkey/Predator choke (non-ported, .670 I think) that came with the gun with the 3.5in. 1 7/8 load and got 153 in the 10" at 40, pretty even pattern and not too tight on the 20 and 30yd. Was fairly satisfied with em considering the POI was nearly dead on and I didn't have to change my sights. Now I am torn between Fed HW 7 or Win LB's (averaging 220 with 6 shot and around 180 with 5's on the LB's). Pattern Density with LB's or Hard hitting HW 7's,?

owlhoot

153 is plenty dense , room for error at 20 and 30 yards which can happen so often.
Hw 7 effectiveness.

As I have stated before, I bet I have tried 10 chokes when I was trying to get the Heviweights to pattern. I spent so much time and money on shells and chokes it was ridiculous. At first I was trying to get the #6's to shoot well. I could never get over 150 in the 10 at 40. And then along came the Heviweight #7 and a Truelock choke.

My 21" 11-87's with the 3" shell will do 170-180 all day.

My 24" Super X-2 with the 3.5 shells will do 210-220 all day

My 23" sure shot with 3.5 shells does the same 210-220 all day.

The patterns are all very even.

Don't gobble at me...

I got 157 in the 10". Keep in mind this is with the 20 gauge load not a 12. So I think it's pretty good.

It was putting 268 in the 10" at 25. I didn't do a photo but I was getting about 225 at 30 yards.

Win 1300 20 gauge(22" polished barrel), SSX .550 and 3"/1.5oz Fed HW7 load = 140/10" @ 40yds
Win 1300 12 gauge(22" polished barrel), SSX .643 and 3"/1 5/8oz Fed HW7 load = 165/10" @ 40 yds

Not the numbers others are getting but I think they'll work a little bit beyond 40yds.

Perhaps this will sway your decision...not that you or anyone (responsible hunters)would and I'm not saying am encouraging this ....I only did this to see what kind of penetration the #7 HW would provide,@ 100yds. they went THRU 5/8" particle (pressed) board!!!! It was a brand new piece so I KNOW it was the #7s that penetrated it.I know there will prolly be some nay-sayers but thats ok cuz I have no reason to lie.

Since the screw up @ Federal the 20s have been handin' it to the 12s....I spoke with Rob @ Gobbler Guns and he was tellin' me that was the case for him as well...
