Hickory is like a 30-06.  It ain't cool but it sure dose kill.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

One of my favorites is bubinga then I would say Purple Heart or rosewood.

I like persimmon and dogwood for slate, hickory, cocobolo, and dymondwood for glass.

Hickory is the best all round then I would go with purpleheart or locust.

If I had to pick one it would be African Blackwood,  hard tight grain, but any hard tight grain wood will function,  each one will produce a different pitch.

The one I have to carry is purpleheart, followed by dymondwood and persimmon.

I like bocote and tulipwood.

My absolute favorite strikers are the old laminate flare tip "Lightning Strike" series from Ted Peters. Both the birch and oak will take an average call and make it exceptional. I seldom carry them anymore because I'm terrified of losing them.

I have a few strikers made by Pete Peters and I agree, they are awesome. I also have several Dad's strikers made by Dewey Johnson and they are very similar in shape and size of the ones Pete made. They are equally good on about anything I put them on.

I don't go in the woods without a black locust striker.
