What kind of shell/choke combo are you using and what are the numbers you are getting?

ILIKEHEVI-13

I am shooting a 3" chamber 870 28" polished barrel I did myself.  I shoot the older Hevi-13 3" 2oz 7's and a MAD Super Max .675 choke and light it up with these shells.  I'll show you.

Here's the front of that pattern above.

And here's the turkey target I had taped to the center of that cardboard above.

I may try 6s and 7s through my PG before I go and do anything else.  I think I also have a tightwad and a JH I can try also.

Thanks!

The Pure Gold .670 I have one of them too.  It does very well indeed.  A lot of folks have good luck with the Jelly Head .660 choke.  My barrel didn't like either Jelly Head.  I tried them both with the 7's.  About 200 in the 10" was the best they could do.

I had a Indian Creek .669 choke that did well, too with the 7's.

Here's a target with the Pure Gold and the 7's at 40yds.

Here's another choke I would highly recommend with the 7's in a 28" barrel 870.

Rem Ventilator .655

If your interested, I can give you link to buy one for $25 shipped to your door.

3" 870 Shell Shucker

I use a 3" 870 with a 28" Barrel.  I've gotten my best Lead & HTL patterns using an Indian Creek .665 choke.

There have been many different chokes which have achieved successful results in 870's on Old Gobbler.  Chiefly, these appear to have been:

Indian Creek .665
Pure Gold .670
Gobblin' Thunder .655 and sometimes .660 or .665
Jelly Head .660 and sometimes .665
Rhino .660
SumToy .650-.670
Ventilator .655

Gutsdozer

Shell Shucker,

I'm guessing that If you could only buy one of the chokes you listed it would be the Indian Creek? I have a Truglo TG170X .665 and it doesn't seem to give me very good patterns. I have bought a Jelly Head Maximum .660 and an Undertaker .665 (Says lead only but I've heard you can shoot Hevi also). I haven't had a chance to try them yet though.

I've had good luck with my setup.

3" 870 w/28" barrel
Undertaker .665
3" longbeards #6
214 in a 10" circle @ 40 yds

Also killed a bird last weekend at 56 yds.

I have the 28" barrel 870 SM and use a Jellyhead .665.  With Longbeard #4's at 40 I got 151, Longbeard 5's I got 172, and with hevi shot #6 I got 170.  I recently picked up some of the old Remington Hevi Shot #6 1 7/8 ounce and it puts a similar pattern to the hevi 6's, just a bit better and holds together further.  I also have had very similar results to all with the undertaker .675 and TruGlo Gobble Stopper .665.  The Longbeard 4's are my go to for open fields/plots.  In the woods I am running the Remington Hevi #6's backed up by the Longbeard #4's.  Those Longbeards are putting up insane numbers with a ton of chokes and are holding their pattern very well.  My brother shot one at 30 and dad at 40 with the Longbeard #5's and thought they both shot low (beard height on the side) they had many pellets that were complete pass throughs.  Did I mention that they are cheap?!  With that said, I love the old Remington #6's.  I have killed more birds with that shell than any other.  I bought them because I haven't had a shot yet and needed some old school luck ha ha.

I also use a .665 jellyhead with my 870 28" barrel SM. I don't do the 10" circle thing. I use turkey head targets. With longbeard 3" #6s I have gotten as many as 83 shot in the kill zone at 40yards and with 3" #5s  I've gotten as many as 56 shot in the kill zone
