i went to pattern my rem. 870 super mag yesterday. it's one with 23" barrel. shot a few light loads to get point of aim. put a 3 1/2" hevi-shot #6 and boy did it kick. had it in lead sled on small table and had a ratchet strap on it. strap didn't hold. i am going to order me some hevi-shot #6 in 3". i don't think i need the 3 1/2's.

You might want to try some 3" 1 and 3.oz #6 Hevi-13 and the Rem Ventilator .655 choke if you want to shoot a load that shoots great and don't kick near as much as the heeavier loads.

Let me get you a link to the choke.  Give it a try and I will show you how it shot for me in a min.

i switched from hevi 3.5" 6's and Mag blends to 3"-2-7's, with the 7's there is no need for a 3.5" shell or the recoil that comes with it, many believe the larger payloads associated with the 3.5" shells are too large for the 12ga bore to handle adequately, IMO payloads over 2oz are better suited for the 10 gauge

my mossy 835 with a tightwad choke[thanks to ilike hevi13] loves the 2oz-1.5/8 oz 3in loads :z-guntootsmiley:

Here's the pattern I was telling you about.  And this was shot in 45 degree weather.  Those numbers should go way up in 60 degrees or warmer.

I shoot the 3 inch in my mossy 835 and I feel that is all I need. I shoot mag blend for turkey and it is not bad on recoil (I do have a Limbsaver recoil pad). I carry 3 inch dead coyote also and I have a box of 3.5 inch H13 #6's but I have not had the opportunity to shoot them yet. To me it just depends on what your gun likes and you are comfortable in shooting.

I get better patterns in a 3-2-6 in my Rem SM than by using 3.5-2-6 in the Winchester loads

Wolfpack

I have always gotten better patterns with 3" shells in my 870.
Been using Hevi-13 3-2-6's for the last couple seasons, tried some
Blends with a new JEB's prototype choke and was impressed with both.
JEB's is a new company just starting out in Hazlehurst, Ga. They are
just aquireing their liability Insurance and are not for sale yet.
I will post some pictures when I get a chance. Just for the record, I'm not
affiliated with them.

Sure I shoot 3" in a 935.  I am not convinced I need the extra recoil of the 3 1/2"  Until I am I will shoot the 3".

Just so you know that I tried a 3" 2oz #6 hevi-13 loads in that Ventilator choke, and it didn't shoot nothing like the 1 and 3/4oz load.  Just thought I would pass that on to you.  If you want to shoot the 2oz loads, I would try a more open of a choke around .665 or .670.

surehuntsalot

I shoot both 3" and 3.5" in my 835,95% of the time if I am turkey hunting with my 835,it has a 3.5" in the chamber
it's not the harvest,it's the chase

hookedspur

I have patterned both and the 3.5 puts around 50-60 more always
