"We have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.  We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed" (2 Corinthians 4:7-9).

Are the priceless Crown Jewels of England kept in a fragile clay pot?  Nope.  Museums secure priceless treasures in bulletproof glass surrounded by laser beams and armed guards.  But St. Paul says that the greatest treasure in the world is contained in common clay jars of little intrinsic value, and that break easily.

What treasure?  The treasure is the knowledge and faith in Jesus' atoning work for all men.  God places His living grace within the hearts of men, especially in the hearts of faithful pastors, Sunday School teachers, missionaries who share this astounding and priceless gift!

Shouldn't such messengers be treated with honor and dignity?  And yet, Paul says they will be hard-pressed, confused, tormented, and attacked.  The hatred that pushed Jesus to His crucifixion also pushes His faithful followers.  The world and its sinful desires hopes to put an end to Jesus by destroying His under-shepherds, teachers et al., and the congregations they serve.

Yes, the sinful world of men may destroy earthly bodies, but not the ministry of the Word and the untouchable grace of God in Christ!  The Gospel of Jesus gives life because it is God's power unto salvation.  What a treasure!  It endures forever!

May the Lord continue to bless and protect the work of our faithful pastors, teachers, missionaries, and enable us to grow in faith and wisdom under their care.
