Got my Shurshot and started installing it but what is the best way to take off the fore-end nut on the original? It has a slot on either side - looks like a spanner wrench would be ideal but I don't have any. Could I just use a vise, flat head, and a hammer and tap it around the threads??

Yes you could but use a brass punch that way you wont bung anything up.

There are videos on you tube that show the process very well.

If you can find a forarm wrench it is a very easy job . Ebay has wrench under 25$.
