Well the stoeger is the winner at this point, 160 in a 16" at 40 yrds, man those heavy 13s 6 shot has some force behind them.  way more than the nitros

300 makes me happy but 80-100 evenly spaced pellets in the 10 will kill them every time

X2 I'm still chasing 300.

100 in the 10 will do it every time.

I try to choke my 3.5" Hevi #7.5 loads to where I'm at 380-410 in the 10 at 40.

With 3" Hevi 7.5s I'm good with 300-320.

I like to see about 260-270 with 3.5" Hevi 6s.

200-220 is all good with 3" hevi 6s.

I like 120+ with lead 6s.

Regardless of the gun or load, I like to find where I can consistently get 100+.

I  like around 200 of Hevi shot 6's in the 10", that leaves approx. 275 more hanging around in the 20" circle. I have taken 6 with my current set-up 8 steps to 51 steps and all have dropped like they had a cinder block dropped on them.

A .410 loaded with TSS 9s is a bonafide 40 yd turkey gun.  Loaded with lessor shot, I wouldn't take a .410 after turkeys.

I look at 20" numbers, not just 10".  I want a 20" pattern with no place for a turkey's head and neck to hide.   I also want a dense enough pattern to give me plenty of cushion for range estimation errors.  300 or so in the 10" and 500+ in the 20" is what I like, assuming the pellets give me plenty of penetration energy cushion.

what are tss 9 shot, never heard of it and very interested if you claim they pattern well

TSS is Tungsten Supper Shot., a non toxic shot that is almots twice a dense as lead.  The #9 is the shot size.

Why do some people accept lower numbers for different ammo/gauges? It seems people will be happy for 100 #6's in 20 gauge but want 150 #6's in 12 gauge. This makes no sense to me.

It all has to do with the MER(maximum effective range).  More in the 10 at 40 just stretches out your MER, the range you can consistently place 100 in the 10.  If I were to select a 20ga with lead 6s, I'd be tickled pink to have 100 in the 10 at 40 consistently.  That's a tall order and hardly any 20s will do it with lead 6s.  Maybe that range would turn out to be 35yds, so be it, that's the MER to stick with in the field for that rig.  With a 12 and the same(lead 6s), you may stretch that MER to 40, 45, and maybe even a touch further. Same goes for other gauges and shot sizes as well as types.

Just remember that 100 in the ten consistently on a calm warm range session is a far cry from a cold windy spring morning.

Ditto, I shot a Winchester HV load in high wind and got 84 in the ten at 40 yds....later, on a calm day, I got 101 with the exact same setup.

ILIKEHEVI-13

Well I'm happy with my 300+ patterns I get with Hevi-13 #7's 3.5" shells in my 835 with a Star Dot choke.
