In my experience, thinner reed material is generally easier to "run" than thicker material. I think a lot of less-experienced mouth call users find that it is easier to control factors such as air/sound volume and general sound control with thinner materials. On the other hand, proph-constructed calls are harder to "maintain",...that is, taking proper care of the call so that the reeds don't stick together and/or gradually relax so that the sound quality deteriorates over time.
Of course, I'm sure there are very experienced guys that prefer the sounds they get out of proph-built calls. Ultimately, I think it all ends up being a matter of personal preference,...as well as individual calling mechanics and techniques. It's always good to experiment with different materials to search for the combination that works best for each of us.
