what is best wood combos for box calls for merriams

PharmHunter

They yelp just like every other turkey you've heard.  No need to overthink it.  They will barnyard gobble their heads off at whatever wood combo/dialect you choose.

This is true. The only thing I change when hunting Merriams is to take a high pitched box for the long distant calling that often comes with the Merriams terrain.

This.

I have a purpleheart/purpleheart short box I like.  And for a production call, the FoxPro with the hole in the bottom (I have it stored away.  But it's Rude Snood or something similar to that) is high pitched and will REALLY reach out and touch their ears.

The good Lord ain't made a gobbler I can't kill.  I just gotta be there at the right time.....  on the day he wants to die.

The merriams that I hunted during the 4 years I lived in Colorado seemed to prefer a slate pot call and a Buice trumpet above all else. I never got much response to box calls from them. That could just be that I'm not great at running a box though.
