I'm not qualified to answer but when I went to see Mr. Lonnie Mabry he said Walnut/Poplar is his favorite.

If you want rasp,,holly is a safe bet.

ferocious calls

Walnut over butternut.  All red oak can really get raspy. Red oak actually makes a great call ,but not many use it. My Sqwak Box is all red oak. Kenny Crummett said it was the best one in the box.

Walnut lid/Mahogany body; i.e. Lynch® World Champion™, and Fool Proof™.

I'm always fond of a persimmon box with a Macassar ebony lid.

I'm usually not after tons of rasp but generally when I listen through call makers sound files a bloodwood/butternut or bloodwood/walnut combo usually stand out to my ear as a good balance of front end and finish rasp.

To be honest a good call maker can make a hen come out of about any wood combo from his shop. If you want raspy you might look at the type of call or call maker I know most fiddle  boxes by TJ and Watkins seem to be more raspy than the average cost style short box

Don't overlook Bloodwood and black Limba for the sound you described!

Walnut/poplar is my first pick, purple heart/cedar second.
