Meleagris gallopavo

Maybe why the population is good in my area of Virginia is that no one hunts turkeys anytime other than the spring.  They could if they wanted to but I've never seen or heard of anyone doing it.  Deer and duck season is the focus in fall and winter.  Never heard of anyone shooting a turkey with a rifle down here either.  NC has all day turkey hunting the whole spring season but Virginia's season is one week longer than NC's.  The NC and Virginia spring season begins one the same day.  I usually don't start hunting in Virginia until I tag out in NC.  I live very close to the state line.

I live and hunt by empirical evidence.

If it wasn't open season on hens for months out of the year, our turkey population would be in much better shape. Duncan knew he was on the way out, and he threw a January season in there too. Until we stop killing hens nothing will change.
