BROWNING GOLD NITRO AMMO#5's BIG LICK, VA.

« on: July 27, 2010, 11:01:50 AM »

Well I finally got a day off from work and made it to the range to try the new Strikeloads TK101 and a few other loads .
Today was mainly for the Strikeload TK101 but I did fire and test a few other loads I'm working on.
I will post those results as I fine tune them.

All testing was at 30 yds with a Winchester 1300 18" and an IC670 choke.
Temperature was 68 to 70 degrees this morning.

I reworked the whole load basically except for the hull and shot. I reworked  this load to a 1 3/4 oz #6 Hevi with a new wad and new powder and I even added a tight seal for the load.  I'll have to say that today went over pretty smooth with no problems at all.

I didn't have any hulls to stick in the gun, didn't see any pressure signs, and the shells ignited very smoothly and evenly.
Better than the old strikeloads.  I felt like the recoil was a little lighter but the velocity was right around 1200 fps.
I'm about 40 feet slower then the lab. All shells ejected from the gun smoothly.
I averaged 278 on shots in a 12" circle, which is what I test all my ammo with, and feel I can tighten it up if I go to an IC660.

This is the 1st of many tests to come from this new load but it was a good start.
I know you can't read pressure signs by only looking at the empty hulls but they did look pretty good.
I will be loading up 6 rounds of this ammo and will be sending to the lab next week to have it tested.

I feel that this may be the safest and best ammo I ever loaded.    Right On

I hope to get psi down in the 15,000 - 14,000 or under........wish me luck!!!

I'll post the report after I get it back from the lab.

Thanks
Brian

I do know the date is wrong on the pictures, its hard to change the date every time you change the batteries.  It's very hard to see.    Begging

looks like the ones you patterned were all pretty consistant. Hope they test good at the lab for you. Good luck. You know if the lab gives you  Right On that wont be the end of testing, you'll move on to another load.

Good job Brian.  Very consistent velocity and patterns.  I hope the pressure turns out OK.

Looks like a sweet load to me. That should rock ones world, for sure!! I guarantee if you tighten that up to a .660, you will probably be smoking close to 300 at 40 yds.

Nice patterns Brian. Congrats

That's pretty quick for a short bbl(your 18in?). Are you going to back them down any?

That would be my thoughts as well.........

Your patterns are very good, especially with a 18inch barrel. You've made several changes that will lower your pressure but you've pushed your velocity back up another 70fps to 1,200. If your gonna shoot the 6's then I believe you can lower your velocity way down and still have plenty of range, just look at the hevi13's at 1090, plenty of kill power and I chrono them outtta my 24" guns at only around 1050! I know how it is to get caught up on a certain velocity, when I first started I had 1,200fps in my head too, wanted all my loads to be at least 1,200fps, took me a while to find the errors of my ways, but I finally did.

You already have one lab report to base data off of so you can see that you run about 40fps slower than the lab, this is below normal with only about 5fps per inch of  barrel, maybe your chrono runs a little fast, the lab tells me they see on average 7-8 per inch, I see more like 10-12 with my loads. Looking at that your 1200 should come out to around 1240 at the lab. What this all boils down to is I think you might be back up to around 16K psi if you send in your load at 1200, I think you'll need to back down to at least 1150 to meet your goals on pressure................ IMHO

I hope this counts as a positive contribution to the forum....  so Funny

Did you drop em down a grain?  think it should be real close to what your looking for.

Shooting in the 60's........ nice! You don't have any problems with your chrono when shooting in the early morning or late afternoon with the sun at a sharp angle like that?  I have to shoot with the sun near straight up if it's sunny, cloudy ain't so bad, problem with that is it's been 100 degrees in the middle of the day and the unit starts to have problems with the heat, not to mention that it's brutally uncomfortable to shoot in. Problem solved though, just got my infrared light kit in, can shoot right at dawn and dusk or even at night now.

I wish we could get some 60s down here, supposed to be over 100 for the next 7 days.

Good Luck with the patterning

I did drop the powder down a grain in the TK101 and we will see what the chrono reads.

Its going to be in the 60's "sat" morning and then its going to be hot for about a week after that.
This will be the last time i will get to go to the range... for i have some big jobs coming up for the next 3 weeks, by then i will have the lab work back on the TK101 and go from there.

Taz   I hate summer time ......allways did, even as a kid !!!!!

thanks guys
