What is a good choke tube to start with out of an 870 20 ga?
My brother has a sweet little rem 870 that I would love to set up as his turkey gun, but was wondering what the best place to start is. Number 6 is it for us.
He does'nt have a dedicated turkey choke, so what's the consensus here?

I had better luck with the EM waterfowl 6s than the last few years H 13 6s run through a PG 555.. Not huge numbers but better and more consistent than the current turkey offerings..

With this being said, EM switched to 5 shot boxes this year for 20g H 13, so maybe just maybe they fixed the problems with the #6 load..  Its hard to say because no one I know has been shooting them since the production of the No 7 load.. So I would recommend trying to find them 6s in a 5 shot instead of 10 shot box..

Thanks Tom. Sounds like a decent starting point. Right On Right On

When I had a  870 20 ga I shot a Jellyhead choke with the remington Hevishot 6s. I am still shooting those 6s with a Tightwad choke out of a different gun now.

If I was forced to shoot #6's. I would find a good non ported choke in the .560-.570 range, and shoot the 3" 1 1/2oz #6 federal hw's. The remington super full would be a good start.

That is another great option as well and a in expensive choke to start your endeavor that has worked for many, not me though.. LOL

Another option is to use the Winchester #5 Supreme Elite loads as they have been very consistent although shot numbers are low @ 1 1/8oz. shot.

The Fed #6 1.5 oz. and Rem SF , SSX, Trulock 570 or Carlson 570 should give decent hunting numbers. My shots were 104,105,106 ,can't remember choke but I believe it was 40 yards . Nice even patterns.

I shot some of the "sorry" H-13 #6s in a SSX on a Rem last year and got around 125 at 35 yards.

I would suggest the RemingtonSF as well.  The price is good and it has performed well for me.  I haven't shot #6 turkey loads through it though, only H13 #7.  My gun liked the RSF quite a bit more than the SSX with a couple of different loads, not all of which were turkey loads.

The Fed FC HW #6's produced 120's for me @ 40 with my RSF 'leadshot only' choke.  That's from a 1100 though and I have been informed that there is a difference with the 870's.  The old EM duck loads gave me high 90's if my memory is correct.
