Best choke and constriction for TSS # 9 out of 870?
« on: June 11, 2020, 10:05:33 AM »
I have been researching what is the best choke tube and constriction for TSS #9 for the Remington 870 3 inch Mag SPS 12 gauge. Finding different answers.  Some experts say .665 tube, Truelock says .640, others say .665, .660. I know I will get the right info from the forum, all advice is welcome and appreciated.

Indiana Creek .665 is hard to beat.
That being said I shoot a Rhino Gen 1 .660

Likely depends on what shell you are shooting. Have heard reports that Feds need more choke to defeat their stupid FCW. With handloads (1.75 oz and 2 oz), my 1187 shoots a Rem SF HS .675 very well - 50% of pellets in 10". Wouldn't want it any tighter.

Has alot to do with what shell.   I seen a few different size chokes work.  Now the past year we have seen something change in the loads also.   We have had to choke little smaller this year to get the same patterns.
Tell us just how dead do you want them to be and we will see if we can get that for you.

My 870 with a 23” barrel and IC .665 puts 390 pellets in 10” at 40 yards, with 620 pellets inside 20”.. good even pattern. That is with a 3” handload of TSS #9, 2 oz. It also shoots 3” Hevi13 2oz, very well. Turkeys drop, no flop.

IC or Sumtoy .665 work well in most 870's.

In no way, shape, or fashion am I criticizing anyone shooting TSS in a 12 gauge. To each his own, for sure! I have to say, though, that considering the expense differential between pure TSS loads and, say, Hevi-13 ( which does contain some tungsten ), I`m curious as to rationale. Is it simply superior ballistics? Even though I don`t shoot it in my 12 gauge 870 Super Mag because I`m perfectly satisfied with the Hevi-13 load I shoot, I`m the first to admit that TSS is a revolutionary load, particularly in sub-gauges.

Try some Hevi 7's, I think you'll be impressed.  You'll probably forget all about the TSS.

For 12 gauge, IMHO, the expense for TSS is not necessary. Between Hevi-13 loads and Winchester Longbeard XR lead loads, just no need. Sub-gauges, another story entirely.
