On to Maine late season!
« on: May 27, 2020, 08:19:12 PM »
Headed to Maine this Friday to close out the final 7 days of the season.  boatloads of public land options to sift through and if anyone has any kind of general pointers would be greatly appreciated! I am blessed to have had the opportunity of hunting 10 or so states now so would be more than willing to trade info if needed for another state!

Tip of the year, how does the therma cell work on those SOBS?  We have buffalo gnats in Illinois they eat deet and use thermacel for a heat source!

I canceled my Maine plans earlier and hunted NY instead. Motels,RV parks, and campgrounds don't open until June 1 and you will need to fudge re: 14 day quarantine on arrival. Anyways, just a heads up that lodging, camping, etc, may be an issue unless you have a friend to stay with at least until June 1.

Good luck and enjoy the lobster, I hear it's cheap this year!

PS: You probably are aware, but no Sunday hunting in Maine, but you can hunt all day which is unusual up North.

Post pics and safe travels!

Works like a charm on them.

John and I went separately. They were further north than me in North Central Maine and I’m pretty sure they were in birds everyday and connected. They knocked on quite a few doors to get permission. For me it was the best hunt of the year

Good to hear! I hunted up there unguided in '18 and '19. Lots of birds. A lot of the locals are more than glad to grant permission. The turkeys really wear out the feed around the dairy farms in the winter and are apparently destructive on the apple orchards as they nip the blooms in the Spring. Maine's wildlife department has listened to the locals and have a 5 bird Fall season which must mean they don't like turkeys. Crazy law IMO. Again, glad you had a good hunt. I plan on getting back there next Spring God willing.

I didn’t see any other hunters. It was also late season, but I got the feeling it’s not that huge in Maine so I’m not sure if many folks hunt fall season at all to tell you the truth

No, they don't hunt much in the Fall, but I still think 5 birds in the Fall is too many regardless.
