My 12 year old son has just asked for a turkey call for his birthday. I know it is late notice due to the time of year, but I thought about getting him a custom box call. He does okay with a slate or glass call, but seems better with a box call. This first week of being out of school he has spent watching a lot of turkey hunting videos trying to learn. He has worked on a box call and his mouth calls all week practicing to get better.
Any recommendations for a hunting “grade” call that a 12 year old would have success with? I would like above average quality. I have tried to research the forum, but I am finding it difficult to determine the right wood combination and call maker. I really do not know how much I should spend on a call for him to help him succeed. I do not want to go cheap and make it more difficult, but I also know he is a 12 year old that is still learning to take care of his equipment.
He has not killed a turkey yet though he has killed a couple of deer and a bunch of coyotes. I let him do all the calling when we go hunting trying to let him do everything except driving the truck.
Thanks in advance.
