Choke advice for 870 and/or mossberg 500
« on: January 22, 2020, 09:07:00 PM »
I have a friend that has never turkey hunted before and is going with me this year. He has a Remington 870 and Mossberg 500. Both 12 gauges. I am looking for advice on chokes, mainly using Longbeard shells as his first year he doesn’t want to dive too far off into it yet. We have to wait til I get him hooked. He’s dead set on using one of his guns as I tried to talk him into toting my 870 20 gauge I have setup since I’ll be using my Affinity 20 this year but no dice. I have never used either of his guns for turkeys I’m not sure what chokes they like. My Browning BPS likes the .665 Indian Creek but my Maxus blew out that tight so I had to back it down to .670. So what are y’all seeing out of your 870 and Mossberg 500 12 gauges? What constrictions do they like?

Thanks for any and all help.

I shoot a truglo ssx in my 500, but I would probably try a Carlson's longbeard choke if I were shooting longbeards.  I would make him shoot your gun though.  I don't care how much someone loves their own gun, if they are inexperienced and going with me they have to shoot my gun because I know exactly how it performs. You sure don't want to call in a bird for him just to have him shoot 2 feet over it.

I have tried to explain that point exactly but I told him not to worry with carrying but one she’ll because if he misses I’m putting that bird down. I ain’t out here to educate birds. Lol.

Both my buddy and I shoot 870`s. We both use .660 Jellyhead chokes, as do a number of others that I`ve seen posted on OG. It`s almost as though Jellyheads were made for 870`s.

Get great patterns with indian creek or carlson in an 870 the shorter barrel ones (21 in.) Seem to like a little tighter choke than the 26-28 in. I have had several 870s also bought my son and nephew both one mossberg 500 fine but if i could pick between the two be 870 for sure the Carlson was cheaper and doesn't stick out the end of the barrel as far ( about an inch shorter) it shoots as good as my indian creeks

That’s what I run. I have sumtoy’s on my youth 20 870 and affinity and Indian Creek on my Bps and Maxus. He just wants to save money. Also why I told him just shoot one of mine I have 5 guns that I know what to expect from the pattern with each shell/choke combo. Some people are a bit thick headed. Lol. I am just curious because those two idk what to shoot with them.

Most Remington's like .660 SumToy  is a great choice.

Mossburg 500 like .660 or .665 Carlson's Long beard choke would be good also.

Don't forget to pattern them.

Good luck.

I used a Carlson choke this past year with my 500 and long beards. I was happy with it. After putting on an Indian creek choke for my 835... I’m forever using Indian creek

The Longbeards shoot tight to start with. In my 870 Special Purpose Magnum with a 26" barrel using a Jellyhead .660 choke the pattern at 15 yards is a little bigger than the size of baseball...pretty easy to miss, especially for a first time turkey hunter. With a Carlson .670 choke, the pattern opened up to about the size of volleyball and still has very good, even pattern at 40 yards.

My gun prefers the 3" shells over 3 1/2" shells. The 3 1/2's(any brand) always blow apart leaving big holes in the pattern. When shooting Longbeards, it likes 5's over 6's although there isn't a big difference in them. The 5's pattern is just a little more even.

I have a Mossberg 535 12 gauge that shoots great patterns with the Indian Creek choke and 3" Longbeards
