Putting glue and feathers under glass
« on: August 05, 2019, 11:21:01 PM »
I saved several feathers from my first turkey including the iridescent chest feathers, I would like to build at least 1 kit call and include a couple of those feathers under the glass and if I am satisfied with how it comes out make two more one for each of my nephews.

I do have some questions that need to be answered though, for one how would I go about attaching the feathers, would I do it to the soundboard surface or to the underside of the glass or crystal striking surface?

My other concern is what would be the best way to apply the glue to striking surface? As seen below I did a horrible job of gluing on the soundboard on the one call I did but it had a slate striking surface so it was hidden. Is there a way to apply the glue so it would be transparent?

For call I did get the E6000 and I also got the Tightbond 3 glue. Oh my finish will be polyurethane again, I still have quite a bit left. I do want to get better brushes this time though.

I just got my arm out of the sling after surgery so I am going to have to really baby it, the hardest thing is going to be sanding the parts down, I could not move my index finger or thumb on my left hand for days after sanding the last one by hand.

I am on that site but forgot my password, waiting for email from them now. I do not have a lathe, somebody had sent me a link for a chuck that I could put on a drill for sanding but the kits that I do buy do not have a center hole so I don't think that would work? This is the chuck https://www.shipleysoutdoors.com/mandrel.aspx

Oh, okay, I thought it was for sanding from what I had been told. Still waiting for that other site to send me something so I can reset my password.

My first attempt to place a feather on the soundboard. Easy. Placed a small dot of E6000 and then added a small item to weigh it flat as it dried. Purpleheart and Old Growth Heart Pine Pot - Glass over Purpleheart.

FYI, I would apply the finish including the interior of the pot before gluing the soundboard and slate .
