870 & TSS
« on: May 06, 2019, 06:33:56 AM »
Just snagged an 870 12ga from a coworker for a steal of a price.  28" barrel.   Looking for suggestions on chokes for 3" TSS 9's.    Not looking for the tightest thing in the world, something somewhat forgiving at 20 but still putting up good 10" and 20" numbers at 40.

Best results will be obtained with your own TSS  hand loads or find someone to load some for you.  For the pattern you want, pick your brand. They all have chokes to do what you want.

if your gun came with a factory full or even a modified choke I would try them first.

those chokes with TSS might give the patterns your looking for at the yardages you stated.

I have the factory extra full turkey choke, which I believe is a .687

Here's some patterns I shot a couple weeks ago with my 21" 870 using a ICBDS .665 and HSHD.675:

Indian Creek .675. Using 2.5oz of #9s I shoot 500 in a 10" circle with another 300 in the 20" circle. 550/260 with a .665 Indian Creek.

At 30 yards my 870 with 26" barrel and factory full choke shooting Federal 3" #9 shot put 415 in 10" circle. After getting these results, I could easily stop my search for the perfect setup. But, I won't. Too much fun tinkering.

Have you shot the full choke at 40 with the TSS 9’s.

For what you are looking for, I would stay between .675 and .690. I would definitely try the .687 and factory full if you have one.

Have one of those .687 x-full that came with a Rem 870 21” bbl that I purchased. Will give that one a try. Those patterns with the IC .665 look awesome and a definite set up form the patterns we turned with the Hevi 13 3.5/2.25/7’s. My gun is still turning 300-330 in a 10 consistently with the Hevi 13 7’s but the 20 fails in comparison to these patterns.
