Need help setting up a low recoil gun

Morning all,
After having my second neck surgery, it is apparent that I need to downsize all my guns, but turkey gun is most important.  Would I be better off finding a heavier gas shooting 20 gauge or is the new rage of .410 the way to go.  I don't shoot over 30 yards as a rule so I don't have to have a cannon.  Looking forward to seeing your ideas

Go with a 20 gauge. Lead, hevi, tss feed it whatever floats your boat. 410 even with tss is still tricky, I'v been working on some handloads for the 410 and it's just no where near as consistent as my 20 gauge has been.

20 gauge for sure .. agree the 410 is more tricky ....  Build you a 20 gauge from a youth 870 , 20 gauge ....you want regret it...

Remington youth 870 with full size Shure shot stock. Some 2 3/4 TSS 9s. And a more open choke since shooting under 30. Will kill every Turkey that's ever walked.
Been there done that with neck surgery.  Three level fusion with plate and titanium screws.  I thought I was done for and wouldn't ever get better.  After about 18 months way better.  That was 2004!

Remington versamax.....softest shooting auto I've ever shot, softer than my sons 20ga pump with magblends that's for sure

Those 410s are nice just make sure you know its limitations or where its shooting. Good luck to you

Eventually the 410 will fail you. I'v had consistency problems out of mine. 140 pattern then a 80 pattern then a pattern a foot to the left for no reason.  The 20 gauge will be more forgiving at all distances with a good tss load and will throw a good 30 yard pattern with 3" fiocchi pheasant nickel plated #7.5. I use the 1.25oz 7.5's to check my red dot and honestly they throw a very even pattern in the 15-35 yard range with light recoil.

Gas operated semi auto 20 gauge with a good choke and a good dose of 7 1/2 shot will do all you need to do to 30 yards.

The 20 gauge route certainly gives you more options in regards to ammo in the future. That being said, I love my 410. It's light, soft recoiling and consistently puts 140 in the 10 at 40 yards with the Apex 9.5s. I don't think you'll have a problem with a 410 patterning 30 yards and in.

     I'd say as long as you set the gun up correctly and know it's limitations a .410 would be the better choice. The recoil difference between a 20 and .410 is dramatic. A .410 is capable of killing turkeys all day long at 35 yards or more (depending on the combination of gun, choke and ammo). I picked up a Henry .410 single shot last week and while testing it ,I couldn't believe how low the recoil was (with factory TSS) when compared to my Franchi Affinity 3 20ga. I know there are softer shooting 20's out there (heavier gas guns), but the difference between the two was unreal. A semi-auto .410 would be a great choice as long as you set it up right and sight it in properly. TSS has changed turkey hunting. A 20 gauge loaded with TSS and the right choke will outshoot a 12 gauge loaded with lead. A .410 loaded with TSS can pattern as well as a 20 gauge loaded with lead. Whichever gun you decide on I would recommend mounting an adjustable sight or optic to it so that you can fine tune the point of impact because different choke/ammo combinations often pattern dramatically different.

The .410 would be fun to play with. I got a BPS and got a Turkey super full choke tube from briley.  Or if you can find a remington 1100, they are threaded for choke tubes too. I dont know if briley could thread a mossberg 500 for tubes, or may not need it since it's a fixed full, just shoot TSS.
20ga gets you alot more options. I wouldn't get a pump. Get a gas auto, preferably a steel gun like an 1187 (if you can find one now).  I just set up 2 1187s for my son for is starter guns for deer and Turkey.  .410s arent legal in illinois yet.

The 20 is much more versatile, especially if you don't mind handloading.  The 20 also has less recoil than the 410 with certain loads due to weight.  My 1oz 20ga TSS load at 1080fps is ridiculously low on recoil and easily capable to 40yds with room to spare.
