Trumpet finish coming off
« on: March 25, 2019, 11:33:27 AM »
Took my new Permar out yesterday afternoon and this morning.  Noticed on the way out that it 'felt' different.  Seems as though the finish is gone from the middle of the barrel.  I can feel the texture of the burl now, whereas before it was smooth.
The only thing I can figure is that it was 80 degrees and humid, so my sweat was on the lanyard that I wrap around the barrel when I stow it away.  Maybe the sweat removed the finish?

What should I do?  Just throw some renaissance wax on it and not worry about it? Or send it back to Ralph to refinish?

Did you have big spray on? that stuff will eat through many finishes, be surprised if sweat alone did it unless the finish was something like shellac or maybe some sort of lacquer. Unless a different finish is used you will most likely have a similar experience. When I used to build guitars, players would sweat a lot while playing, so similar issues would show up. I find that poly finishes are typically more durable.

No spray on.  It's strange.  Should I worry about it, or just wax it and roll on?

Probably should ask Ralph, sure he has some thoughts on what to do. My thinking is it would be best to protect the wood with some sort of finish.

I would put some wax on it and go from there

Ralph offered to replace it with No.50 that he kept for himself made from the same combination of woods. (This one is 49 in the series).  But he said that it shouldn't give me a problem and that waxing it would be fine.  He said that he finished it with CA and that it was odd that the finish came off.  As I said, no bug spray, didn't get wet.  Very strange.
I think I'll put a good coat of Renaissance wax and keep truckin' with it.  Good to know that Ralph will make things right if need be.

Yeah, I've talked to Ralph before and he seems like a great guy. Now your trumpet has character!

Good deal by Ralph....CA is typically a very durable finish, so an anomaly.
