I've found that if you're gonna use dekes, use the most realistic you can afford. That's why I use DSD's nowadays. In my early days using cheapo foam dekes, I routinely had birds hang up and just stare at the decoys then walk away. Since I've switched to more realistic dekes over the years, I have birds come hang out with my dekes, and even bed down near them. Many a gobbler has literally run in to meet his death after seeing my dekes.
I also put the male dekes away half way through the season. Too many gobblers have had their butts kick by Mr. Big or a gang of jakes, and are scared to face off with a male deke. Finally, I mimic what I am seeing in nature. I try to set up my dekes like the turkeys I see walking around. By the end of the season, I tote in one hen only.
Last season, when Hayudog joined me in FLA for a late season hunt, he killed his bird over an upright and feeding hen combo. We never even called to the gobbler. Mimicking the behavior of the local birds at that time of the season. He walked right to the hens and Hayudog hammered him.
With that said, I love running and gunning up north and out west and not having to tote decoys along with me.
