Resin-Ivory

I have several Trumpets all with black delrin  mouth pieces. I really like the looks of real ivory but doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon. Anyone know if the Resin-Ivory is safe to be used as a mouthpiece? I've seen one Trumpet maker that says he won't use it because after drilling etc. there will still be small particles of Resin that may be ingested if used in a mouth piece. I already know it's being used and there's probably  hundreds of people using them . My question is does anyone know for a fact one way or the other it it's safe? I searched the internet but couldn't find anything

Interesting question.  I worry more about adhesives and mold/mildew inside the body.  Some callmakers have been known to use green wood (not totally dried) and/or natural material that can lead to mildew, mold, fungus growing in that nice dark interior climate.  Interested in the various answers.

That's really the point of the question not wanting to take the chance. Your probably right about the Trumpet maker I'm talking about and if you know that much you also know he's against everything but hot air and well water. He also used to make ivory mouthpieces and I'm wondering if he has a reason to believe the Resin mouth pieces are toxic or just trying to down any idea that didn't originate from him. I figured someone else might know the answer to the question. I do like the looks of the white mouth pieces doesn't matter to me if it was real Ivory or not I have no interest in any part of an Elephant.

I would say its as safe as buffalo horn, bone, ivory. or some of the woods that are used some of them are very toxic.

I agree ivory is beautiful. I thought there was white delrin. I may be wrong but Billy Buice uses some kind of white mouthpiece that I don't think is resin that isn't ivory.

I've seen mouthpieces made from "Whitetail" Antler and from Turkey Leg Bone, I'm not too much into trumpets myself but they looked pretty.

Mammoth ivory is still legal and makes a great MP.  It's pricey though.  Obama didn't stop the harvest and sell of friggin wooly mammoths.  Yeah...I'm surprised too.

Found white Delrin they actually make several colors so no need to use the Resin anyway. Never thought to look for it in another color

I would have to agree with Ol Bob's comment on this.  Some of the woods are very toxic, some worse than others.

The white Delrin is very plain looking and somewhat translucent and is the natural color of Delrin from what I understand.  I have used it and have some but I personally do not like the looks of it for a mouth piece.   They do make Delrin in other colors, black being the most common.  As for the other colors of Delrin I have seen brown and know that other colors are available but those colors are generally more expensive from the research that I have done.

A very nice alternative if you want a natural material with a lighter color for that two tone look is the lighter colored buffalo horn which makes for a very nice mouth piece and is usually about 1 1/2 times the cost as the normal black buffalo horn.

I have several trumpets with Camel bone mouthpieces that I like..

Are you referring to elforyn? If so, I have made several mouthpieces out of it. No problems that I am aware of, just have to make sure that you clean it out before using it, which I always do

I have a Buice white delrin mouth piece he sent with my pink ivory trumpet that has the ivory cap,I already had a set of ivory mouth pieces waiting on it,it's nice if you just want a white colored mouth piece but looks nothing like ivory, you can tell as soon as you look at it,and next to my real ivory mouthpieces it's not even close,....but billy does have white delrin he uses for mouthpieces.

Here is an all resin ivory trumpet I made a few weeks ago.  The product drills clean and there is no residue inside.  Makes for a very nice sound since it is very dense.  I have no hesitation about using any of the ivory alternative products.  The better quality resin even has grain lines to it like real ivory.
