Got a couple boxes of the new blended Federal TSS loads. These are actually 1 5/8 oz loads VS the 1 1/2 oz #9 loads.

Hopefully this weather will get warmer and dry up soon so I can test em.

Does anyone know pellet count on the 1 5/8oz  #8-#10 blend? Would be curious to compare it to 1 5/8oz of straight #9s

Have no idea what is in their shells, but a 50-50 blend with 1&5/8 oz of true sized 8s and 10s would contain 637 pellets. 1.5 oz of true sized 9s has 536 pellets. The 9s are by far the better shell IMO. I would only use 10s in the .410, where the increased pattern density could potentially increase your effective range. Nines are the sweet spot with TSS in the larger gauges where penetration and pattern density are most balanced. Eights  have a huge surplus of penetration ability at the expense of pattern density. Tens have a huge number of pellets at the expense of penetration ability.

Having said all that, at 40 yds it makes absolutely no difference whatsoever. You will have a dead turkey on your hands with TSS 7s, 8s, 9s, or 10s.

I was curious. I think straight 9s at 1 5/8oz is around 590. So the diff is roughly 47 pellets on the 9s vs the 8-10 blend.

Thanks for the info.

According to the OP, the straight 9s are only 1.5 oz, not 1&5/8, so if that is true, the difference is more like 100 pellets.

I agree. I was asking with another brand shell in mind.

I see they are only 1000fps that's 200fps slower than the 1.5oz #9 load......That is significant and is gonna hurt penetration.....what are other thoughts on this?

The 9s are only 1100 fps, that's what is listed on the box.

The 10s still get 1.5" of penetration at 40 yds when launched at 1000 fps.

I'm hoping Someone comes out with an Osmium load.  At 22.59 g/cm we should be able to shoot turkeys at 100 yards with dust.

Unless this is a misprint it shows 20ga #9 1.5 oz at 1200fps.....The 20ga reduced recoil loads were 1000fps..............I am just curious because I just put together a remington 20ga and will be testing ammo here shortly and am trying to decide which to try........Do I try the Federals or just try the Apex?                                                                                                                                                                                                                         https://www.rogerssportinggoods.com/ammunition/shotgun-shells/turkey-load/heavyweight-tss/federal-premium-heavyweight-tss-turkey-loads-20-gauge-3-1-1-2oz-1200-fps.html

I believe the 9 shot was only 1000 fps , only the 7's were faster.

That could be good , my 9's are about 70 pellets short in the 1 1/2oz. loads. Purchased last year.

Now my question for these 1 5/8oz. loads . Are these size 8's and 10's or size 8 to size 10? (8-10)

I believe they are an 8-10 blend in the same shell.
