Looking for advice and first trumpet
« on: December 11, 2018, 05:23:44 PM »
Made my mind up I want a trumpet. Never had any suction call. I only spring hunt but just wanting one with a good Yelp not real high pitched. Not wanting to spend a fortune since it's my first but want a decent and good sounding call. Thanks for any advice.

noisy box call that seems to sound like a flock of juvenile hens pecking their way through a wheat field

They are great calls if you put in the time and will come in no different than any other call.  But you have to be careful with movement when they are close.  Good luck!

Go through posts and see who’s calls are mentioned and why. A easy playing trumpet makes learning much easier. You do not have to spend a fortune on a good trumpet. A lot goes into playing a trumpet and it takes time. Good luck!

As a newbie to trumpets, I purchased one last year and killed my first long beard with it this past spring. My advice to you is to get one from one of the many reputable makers here on OG. I got mine from Anthony Ellis with AGE Calls but I understand he now has a waiting list. You might want to check on Ralph Permar's web sight, I think he has a few currently available. As noted earlier, you might want to contact Greg relative to what he has available. Just make sure you get a good, easy to play trumpet from a reputable maker and spend the time it takes to learn how to play it - you will not regret it.

The Permar .45 in delrin with the amber mouth piece is hard to beat. I have MANY trumpets by many of the top makers and it's about  my favorite. Dang tough call too.

Very nice! Smart purchase. What mouthpiece? A 4 will be easier to run than a 3, but you can work your way down.
