For a little higher pitch all cedar can be fantastic. For more mellow hard to beat chestnut or butternut sound board.

I have a small collection of scratchers compared to most guys on this board, got 10 at the moment.

Of those I really like butternut (middle of the road pitch), second would be cedar (highest pitch) and third would be walnut (deepest tone).

Internals and dimensions play a huge factor here. However...Soundboard material matters more than the body of the call (if its two pieces of wood).  Don't forget striker selection.  That can be a game changer.  Personally I like softer soundboards with harder strikers. Much like how box calls are often made. (Hard lid, softer box).  For example cedar board with walnut striker.  Cedar on cedar works well too just because of its acoustical properties and grip resulting in friction.  So many formulas....so little time.  :z-dizzy:

I prefer cedar soundboards myself, and my favorite body is Black Walnut. But I have used lots of other woods for the body and they will all work fine. Any of the woods typically used for box call lids work great as strikers. And yes, internal dimensions are important too.

Anything decent is easy to play. I have lots but my favs are SS redheart w holly soundboard. SS Padauk w butternut, SS yellowheart/mineral poplar and a Lonnie Gilbert Purpleheart/ Butternut. In fairness to Lonnie my buddy has some really good ones but I can’t remember the combos.
Crazy cause as I sit here I continue to think of more I really like. SS 2018 limited edition parkay.
Give these two guys a call. Reasonably priced, easy to run scratchers.
When I first started Al from SS said the scratchers would prob become my go to call. Seems I use em all the time for sure and most mornings it’s what I start with.

Had an SS Ebony and Holly that was a killer. It had the potential that was  way better than I was at running it.

Unfortunately I sold it. Greatly regret doing so.
