He is really working hard to get the front end better on his yelp.  Any suggestions?

Happy

He honestly is getting pretty close. To me it sounds like he is starting out with medium pressure and taking it to the high before dropping into the back end of the yelp. I am far from an expert though. He just needs to start high and drop low in my humble opinion. Can he kee kee? If so he knows how to start high. It's just a matter of starting high and dropping  and not mid-high-low. I may be horrible at explaining this.

Thanks for the input.  He can Kee on some calls, but has a hard time cleaning up the yelp.

Should be able to kill birds anywhere in the country with that calling!!! :icon_thumright:

Nothing wrong with his calling, but it might be helpful to spend some time with control on the yelp.....slow down, exaggerate the length of the high note on the yelp, and then drop into the yawk....after that can be controlled then speed back up to the proper cadence. Some diaphragm calls are tougher to get the front end of the yelp clean, could be that too. Like EZ said, that will work the way it is.

The call he is running in the video is a batwing 3.  He can cutt really good but the plain yelp is tough for him

He sounds far better than I do, that's for sure.

I'd recommend for him to try a modified ghost cut (Sadler Mcgraw is a maker who comes to mind) if he's looking for a cleaner yelp that still has a bit of rasp. As others have said though, that calling will certainly get it done and is better than a lot of folks I've heard.

I think your son sounds is almost there. I think that he would get a better front end of the call with all propalatic reeds. I think all propalatic is much easier to get the high  front end of the yelp.

What is the best cut for clearing up the front end.  He cannot run ghost cuts, mostly runs batwings

It may be as simple as adding a little more tongue pressure when he starts his yelp to get the desired front end. Everyone calls differently, so to tell you exactly how to do it is nearly impossible.

For whatever reason, the ghost cut has become synonymous with kee keeing and clear yelping. However, I would say that any call, with the exception of the standard V cut(for most people), can assuredly replicate a clean yelp or kee whistle.

When it comes to reed cuts, I would say if it's not broken, then it doesn't need fixed. The higher front end you're looking for is already inside of that call, it just may take some practice to bring it out. He's already off to an excellent start!

Thanks for all the replies.  His yelp is getting a little better, I will post another video
