Help with 835 which to choose hevi 6's or 7's
« on: March 06, 2018, 05:51:33 AM »
I need some help I have never tried hevi 13 shells mainly because of price. But this year I bought a new 835 and Indian Creek 675 choke. I want to get the best pattern, distance, and knock down power combination. I see all these great patterns shot with the hevi 7s but I'm concerned about how affective they will be at killing if I ever had to take a 50-55 yard shot. Because of this I was going to go with the 6's but not seeing anyone who's getting great pattern with my combination. What do u all think will the 7s be plenty of knockdown power out to 50+ yards or would u all feel more comfortable with the hevi 6s?  I know it will depend how my gun shots them but at 33 for a box of 5 im trying to make best choice. Plus the guy I bought the choke from was getting amazing patterns with 7s. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

First thing first  :welcomeOG:  I'm an 835 shooter and I shoot Hevi 7's through a .670 Pure Gold choke.  Hevi 7's flat out hammer birds.  I've killed birds out to 38 yards (lasered) and most of them never move after I pull the trigger.  Just for your info, we don't talk about any shots over 40 yards, on this site.  Turkey hunting is a sport that should require us to call a bird in close or let them walk.  Your .675 IC choke will shoot the Hevi 6's or 7's Really well.  For your info, 7's are BAD Medicine on turkeys.

I always shot 6s and got an even pattern that averaged around 225.

I always went with 6's. Not saying 7's aren't plenty capable but I could not bring myself to trust them. I only counted holes once but I think I was in the 185 range on a 10" circle. That was using an original stardot choke.

I have had 7 835's.  From the first 2 original corncob shoulder killers ever sold in my home town in 1990 to my current gun.  The barrel is mirror polished, then I had it chrome lined, had the trigger cleaned up to break at 3 pounds, put a thumb hole stock and limbsaver pad on it and even threw in a stronger mag spring.  Did I need to do all that?  Nope.  I like to tinker though.  Did it help things?  I believe so.  Shooting hevi 6' I get right around 250 avg and 7's I get around 330 avg.  I have killed gobblers with the 7s at longer than 40 yards.  Not a ton further, but far enough where I had to figure how I miss judged the range THAT MUCH.  Tried a lot of chokes for the 835. Prob more than most guys, from the old bansners to stardom (still have a couple of those) to the newer stuff.  Settled on the truglo smackdown .670 because of the geometry that allowed it to fire well, EVERYTHING well.

I’m sure u can’t go wrong with either, but after I tried 7s last year I’m a believer and won’t go back to anything else.

I'm shooting the Hevi-13 2 ¼ oz. #6’ s out of my 935 with an IC .675 and getting 200 in the 10 at 40 with another 160 in the 20. I have a few boxes of 7's but haven't shot them yet.

Seeing as the h13 isn't even 13 gm/cc, but more like 11.5-12, you're missing a out 100 pellets in that pattern...

Mine too!  Love my SSX.  Would like to try an IC for the heck of it.

Shoot one with that IC, I think you will be pleasantly SURPRISED!

With approximately 470 pellets in a 2 ¼ oz. Hevi-13  #6, over 100 pellets hit outside the 20” circle at 40 yards with that setup. Information that may help the OP decide which shot size to buy. I already have #7’s just waiting for warmer weather to pattern them. :funnyturkey:

My 835 liked 6’s and 7’s.  I’ve got a star dot on mine.
