Trumpets

Hi guys,

So I'm new to the forum but have been successfully turkey hunting for 14 years now and I've never used a trumpet. I've heard of a trumpet and wing bone but never used them. When searching the forum I see tons of people posting pics of trumpet calls. They are absolutely beautiful but do they sound good or are they more of a novelty item?  Just want to know if a lot of you guys hunt with them and how they sound.

They have become my primary call. They offer a unique sound that really drive the toms nuts and seem to work when other calls won't.

They do however require quite a lot of practice to learn and maintain your skill. I look at it as a life long journey.

Last year was my first year running suction calls. I ran a wingbone but there isn't a huge difference between the two as I understand it. My experience was that it worked great to get a bird to sound off and start heading my way. I finished them with diaphrams just cause that's how I have always finished birds. They definitely proved their worth to me. I would feel perfectly comfortable with a good suction yelper and a diaphragm in the woods

For me nothing makes a better cluck/cut/tree yelp than a trumpet. I am really using a trumpet and scratcher only these days. They do take practice, but are a blast to learn. They also are not affected by weather or humidity. The public land birds I hunt seem to really respond well to trumpets. For me, KP and Buice trumpets work well, but there are a bunch of good ones.

One of these days I'm gonna try one. I've seen some videos of guys running them and they sound pretty good. I will have to say they are my favorite call to look at. They just have a nostalgic look to them remind me of my younger days. I used to see them at Wal Mart, Penns Woods, I believe.

Just another tool for your tool chest, but definitely not a novelty. Wingbones, Jordans and Trumpets take some practice but it's well worth it. Very addicting to hunters and turkeys!!!

Billy Buice is a great one that I think should have some on hand.  KP if he has any left he did not sale.  Billy McCallister and Matt Mclain make a great one.  Also, hearing great things about Anthony Ellis' calls.

Crawdad will get you started for a good one not to break the bank also. But stay away from the KP 's and the Buices they are what cost you sleepless nights pondering over which wood you want next ...lol
