3" pot call help
« on: February 07, 2018, 04:16:42 PM »
Hi there i started making pot calls 3 years ago and only make 3" surface calls. Theres alot of info on 3 1/2 calls but not so much on 3". Apparently 3" calls are alot less forgiving than 3 1/2. If i had known that i would of made 3 1/2s. I think they sound very good but and having issues tryinh to figure out the right width of the pedistal. I was making them only about 6mm wide and then started making them 12mm wide..but from what ive seen that still may be too small. Any help or insight would be appreciated" thanks

I understand that less surface area that the sound board is sitting on the better..so what i was thinking about doing is basically hollowing it out and leave it about a 1/4 " wide instead of having a solid pedistal.

Can you show your chuck that is holding the middle hole of cherry call.

Its a 4 jaw chuck holding a expanding mandrel. I get the mandrel from a company right here in nh that makes them for like 25 bucks works slick but unfortunately you have to have a 3/4 hole in the call as opposed to a screw chuck.

Ok, 1 in isnt a whole lot..that hole in the center is 3/4 in so thats a pretty small pedistal..i just noticed that alot of calls ive seen have alot bigger pedistals..i just seemed to get a better sound with the bigger pedistal but was thinking taking the rim down to about 1/8 in like u said

The rim on the top is about 1/2 and the rim on the bottom is about 1/4in. In your opinion should i stick with the smaller or larger diameter and just trim the rim down
