Lots of good advice. I like slate with hickory.

I would also throw in here that probably more important than call surface and striker is learning the correct calling technique. Your striker hold and angle and being consistent and keeping the call dressed right. If you could get with someone who is really good on a pot to get you started, the rest is just practice. Once you get the "feeling" down, you'll be able to run anything. Good luck.
