870 20 gauge 26" barrel questions
« on: September 22, 2017, 11:49:01 AM »
I just picked up a full size 870 in 20 gauge since I rebuilt my 870 youth for my son to use (12" lop stock is a little short for me) so I've got a few questions. I would like to replace the recoil pad since I've gotten used to the supercell on my 12 gauge any ideas on what would fit? This has the full size wood stock. Also I have the Remington super full choke and I'm thinking about picking up a Carlson .575 choke any others I should try I've read the longer barrels seem to do better with a more open choke. This was posted in the turkey gun thread I though it might get a better response here

Congrats on the new gun. I also set my youth 870 up for my daughter. Will be purchasing a 26"barreled 20 gauge 870 whenever I get a day off this fall. Like yourself, no experience with longer barrel yet, but a friend has had good luck with the Jellyhead Max. I have several 20 gauge Rem chokes, so maybe I can be more help to you in a month or so.

I've got an older 870 youth with a 25" barrel.
It, heavyweight 7's and a Sumtoy 562 give some amazing numbers.

i had the longer 26" barrel on my 870 20ga when i first bought it, I found a little more open choke .565-.575 patterned the Fed. HW shells very good, The best patterns came from a True Lock .575 and the Rem. SF .572 choke.

I have a 20 ga 1187 with a 26 in barrel. Carlson 575 gave 150 with hevi 6s.

Same choke in an 870 21 inch barrel was around 100.  Screwed in a trulock 575 and we're at 140!
Whoever said you can't kill em from the couch never was good enough to call a gobbler into the living room
